"My Dealer told me {insert dumb idea}" (was "Toyota/Subary Partnership Cancelled?")

HTML Code:

Hey guys,

I was down at the dealer today and ended up ordering my BRZ (heck ya!). This particular one had already been ordered so I should get it in about a week or so. As we talked about timelines and deliveries, the sales guy let it slip that the partnership between Toyota and Subaru had been cancelled. He seemed pretty confident this was a done deal and also that Subaru was about to invest about US$400M in their Indiana plant.

Can anyone confirm this? He said it in a way that I thought it was public information ("I don't know if you've heard it but..."), so I felt comfortable posting it here. Hopefully this is not confidential information and I'm putting anyone in trouble... :X

Anyway, thought I'd bring up the discussion given that may affect future deliveries (MY14 and later) and *especially* availability (which could in turn affect pricing, etc).

Cheers

So, it sounded weird to me hence me asking here since I know everyone here is more knowledgeable than the salesman. The only reason why I thought it could be true is because 1) this was the first car salesman that I actually had a good experience with and was a car fan too and 2) he didn't have to tell me anything: at that point I had already "bought" the car; we were just chatting!

It seems to me this thread is now been hijacked, and that's for the best. It will now be called "Dealer told me {insert dumb idea here}"! :p

Thanks for the laughs, everyone! Keep 'em coming :D

:threadjacked:

Dealerships don't know about anything like that. Take it with a pinch of salt.

kALMIGHTY 07-14-2013 03:32 AM

Did you buy your car from a crack house by any chance?

Chauntalei 07-14-2013 03:36 AM

I'm willing to bet he is just inferring that because Toyota and BMW are working on some conceptual stuff together. Because obviously Toyota can't work with Subaru and BMW at the same time, amirite?

The359 07-14-2013 03:42 AM

It's not a partnership. Toyota owns 16% of Subaru. For Toyota to end the partnership, they'd have to sell off their stake of the company, which would be very public knowledge.

Subaru is investing in the Indiana plant because they plan to start building Imprezas there, as well as more Toyota Camrys.

Toyota also had Subaru stop making their kei cars, and is replacing them with rebadged Daihatsus.

In other words, the "partnership" is not over.

Mu sales guy told me my auto was a dual clutch, dsg, and uses the same racing diff as the WRC STI, also that they come detuned from subaru because toyota asked them to..

Sooooo take what your salesman says with a grain of salt.. This type of info would be well blasted on every autobolg known to man, well before a salesman at a dealership would know about it

86_ZN6 07-14-2013 03:48 AM

dealer told me the car is 4WD. lol!! most of them dont know a thing about the twins.

HAAHAHAHA This particular guy knew what he was talking and we actually had a good time talking about cars in general (we both also love BMWs).

Thanks for the info. Ya, we did talk about Toyota owning part of Subaru and I just assumed Toyota had sold (or was about to sell) their share.

Thanks for the feedback guys... I guess it might've been just an uninformed rumour! :P

Carry on... ;)

BRZnut 07-14-2013 09:15 AM

my dealer told me my BRZ came with power seats...I still can't find the switch.

Take what they say with a BIG grain of salt!

infinite012 07-14-2013 09:25 AM

The dealership I take my car to for warranty work told me the auto BRZ comes with a dual clutch type auto transmission only. I have a manual BRZ, so that made them eat their words.

The same dealership also told me my old STI was a twin turbocharged 6 cylinder.

DEALERSHIPS KNOW EVERYTHING

OICU812 07-14-2013 09:25 AM

Most 6 year olds are more knowledgeable then half of the salesmen at stealerships, nuff said.

a2cpc 07-14-2013 09:30 AM

A) I don't think your dealer has any idea.

B) I could see the possibility of Subaru wanting to end its SIA production for Toyota.

C) I cold also see Toyota maybe wanting to drop out of the BRZ deal if they thought they had a better product with BMW.

D) I don't think your dealer has any idea.

Weeber 07-14-2013 09:38 AM

That's the advantage of buying a BRZ in Australia, all of the process is done online with a fair queuing system (unlike Toyota).

Only the pickup done at dealer.

utekineir 07-14-2013 10:05 AM

the salesman told me this car was fast

Be-Are-Zee 07-14-2013 10:07 AM

My dealer told me the sound system was an amazing Harmon Kardon system developed specifically for the BRZ....then I turned it on.

Hahahahahaha. It's all relative. Still funny. The SUV I traded in (BMW X1) for the car was wayyyy faster.

they'll say anything,

number of years ago i picked up an 07 (mkv) gti great little practical car with solid mod potential, but with stats pretty similar to this. (200ish hp, more torque, more weight).

salesman was talking it up like it was a race car, I pointed outside to the ls2 gto i drove there in parked right on the other side of the window.

He stopped talking about how fast the gti was. The brz/frs feels absolutely fantastic (tires aside) for a stock car in the mid 20k price range.... but my forester makes it look silly.

BRZfan 07-14-2013 11:22 AM

Rumors? This hardly even qualifies as a rumor. One yahoo talking to another and neither really infers or implies correctly. Reminds me of "Who's on First".

wbsrazzle 07-14-2013 12:09 PM

General rule of thumb: Salespeople are the last to know of anything decided at the manufacturer level.

So if nobody else knew of this yet it was just salesman bullshit to make a sale or appear to be in the know.

This is like when I was arguing with the parts department on my oil filter being the wrong one. I ended up being told I was right. During the debacle, one of the tech's came by, said I should have waited for the turbo'ed one. I said so what wait 2-3 years? He said no, the new models are not using the same engine anymore but using the '14 ForesterXT engine. I laughed. He said no its true I saw it at whatever their mechanic school for subaru is.

DeepHunta 07-14-2013 04:43 PM

sales guys don't know jack crap. I like my sales guy. I bought two cars from him already, but when it comes to details, they don't know anything for enthusiasts. Their main job is to sell for the masses, not for us, the enthusiasts.

I was shopping around for a new STI one time, and the first thing that the sales guy asked "are you one of those people who know more about the STI than the us sales guys?" Made me laugh a bit. They really don't know details. Do your own research in forums and journal articles.

And as @The359 mentioned, Indiana plant is expanding to produce impreza's by 2015/2016. BRZ, WRX STI, and Foresters will still be built in Japan.

Anything to make a sale. Sometimes I wish the salesmen would just stfu and let me just deal with a manager who can actually change the sales price. The salesmen are nothing but middle men for the masses weeding out window shoppers from actual potential buyers.

14' forester does use fa20t

wouldn't be suprised at all if a variation of it eventually ends up in these cars, but i'm sure it won't happen till all of us early adopters have been thoroughly suckered in

I dont feel suckered i knew exactly what i was buying, and its not so bad with 200hp cause you do save gas and its plenty fast nuff for city driving, i have yet to see other ppl pulling crazy turns like i do.

Brzetto 07-14-2013 10:17 PM

The sales manager at my dealership knew right away that I knew more about the car than they did. Generally speaking, they couldn't bullshit me even if they tried. I love the part where trolls on youtube tell you Subaru's transmissions are glass and what not, then find out from a knowledgeable person that Aisin makes the tranny.

i did buy one too sir, and i know what i was buying as well, but the car as it comes is slow, thats ok though, if i want acceleration thats just a different set of keys to grab, with the mix of mpg, handling and bit of practicality this makes a very nice run around car.

anyway its simple principles of business, hype a product, acquire nutswingers, release product, milk out the early adopters, hype more, acquire more nutswingers, then release improved product to get those on fence and the early adopters to rebuy.

enjoy pulling those crazy turns on public roads doe.

At my shop we deal with a couple of Subaru dealerships, one of the sales managers at one of these dealerships was telling me he has 5 BRZ turbos on order for MY2014.

Salesmen are morons.

you should play dumb and say 'wow, I didn't know they made superchargers powered off of the front wheels. Its pretty clever when you can get infinite pulley boost from the front wheels as opposed to parasitic loss from extra engine belt pulleys.'

And if the Subaru/Toyota partnership was 'cancelled', the twins would have been discontinued lol.

Better still - drive up in a C7 - it does look a bit like an alien craft of some type.

I'm curious to see what the teaming agreement actually says. Is there a copy of it floating around the internet somewhere?

I've worked on similar agreements, and there's a lot of variety with how they work. It's almost certain that if this agreement were to end, the FA20 would as well, because I really doubt that Toyota would just give away their direct injection. Since the FA20T is available with Subaru direct injection in other Subaru models, I'd imagine that Subaru has full ownership of the rest of the engine design, but they might be paying royalties to Toyota depending on how the agreement works. Some teaming agreements are "Anything developed under it can be used by either company in the future", others are a lot more restrictive and require permission from (or royalties to) the other company for use of co-developed tech. There are also probably some specific pieces of technology that one company is retaining ownership of - i.e. Toyota bringing direct injection, Subaru bringing a Boxer layout. There's a whole world of patents and intellectual property that goes into something like this.

I'm also curious if this is a one-off teaming agreement, or if there are future plans for more Toyota-Subaru models.
