They look kinda 'meh' in this pic BUT it'd be nice to see them on a car.

^^Agreed. I'd like to see this on a whiteout since the background of the light is dark might be a nice touch.

True. I'm having a hard time distinguishing the differences with the JDM version but my guess would be

1) It has D.O.T. lettering on the casing.
2) The casing is clear whereas the JDM version is tinted red.

clear casing is a definite positive for me, but i'm gonna get the jdm spec if it's cheaper! nice ride switchlanez!

What is it about the clear casing that you like?

Probably that it will look less "modded" and more OEM. That was my only slight gripe about mine... that it looked "redded out." Someone even thought they were redded out stock tails. But, never having had tinted tails, the JDM version sorta satisfies my inner ricer plus I'm chasing the LA Auto Show BRZ STI Concept look. To me, those tails look tinted red. So if I could do it all over again, I'd prally go the same route.

if you have a direct contact with Toms, please let them know there would be interest in a USA Spec version but with a "smoked" lens, I am sure I cant' be the only one who would want these in smoked???

What makes these DOT SAE approved over the JDM ones?

I had read that the JDM ones don't have a side reflector? - but I looked at mine and they do have a piece on the side that reflects light.

The biggest difference is likely money spent to pay for DOT-approval. Maybe also proof that the lights to illuminate to a specified light intensity (lumens) which they likely already do without modification. Possibly the lens have to be clear to make that happen or have to be clear regardless instead of tinted red. I'm just guessing here.

Similar to how a car cannot be sold here unles it's DOT and NHTSA-approved. Many RHD versions of their USDM LHD counterparts could probably pass the test but still have to undergo the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of [crash] testing to get approved and be sold in the US. I think the R33 Skyline is one of the few, if not the only, RHD JDM car that's ever undergone/followed that procedure. Money to do certification plays a big part, then minor modifications need to be made to get it up to spec.

IMO these look a lot better than the jdm ones. I like the clear casing and black outlines, definitely more OEM looking.
