Greddy or K&N CAI?

Hey folks. Got a question for ya. I am looking into my first upgrade for my BRZ. Just wondering what you all think. Either the Greddy intake part number 12519101 or the K&N one 69-8619TS. I have also decided on the Greddy Axle back SP Elite exhaust for next spring but want to get the CAI and all season tires out of the way before this winter.
Unfortunately, both CAI's are out of stock (from the sites I have been to) but I am willing to wait. Any of you guys/gals have either? What do you think? Suggestions for other brands? Or just a link to another part of the forum that has this info (I'm at work and the phone doesn't work well in hospitals). Thanks in advance.

Get a tune first. Adding parts to the car with out the tune won't help much. Have a tuner unlock the ecu for more hp and tq.

Tune eh? I figured that would be best after cai and exhaust were installed. More research is in order I suppose.

Here's something else to consider, I have read that the stock air box is really quite good and not so restrictive that it necessitates an immediate change out.
The exhaust system however, is restrictive and the car definitely benefits from its immediate change out.
You may want to spend your money there.

i dont know if thats right. i think it would make sense to have a tune based on the mods you have. an intake is going to lean out the tune itself freeing up some of that power. while i think a tune is more important than an intake, i think it makes sense to tune your car for the intake you have if thats where you want to end up.

Yes. Mods, then tune.

I'm gonna go with most of you guys and my gut on this. Did a little looking last night and it does seem that the stock intake, at least for my purposes, would benefit from a higher flow drop-in filter. Gonna go with a K&N. (About 50 bucks). As far as the exhaust goes, I'm still gonna wait til spring. Turns out there is a shop near me that does a tune for the BRZ..... But they are charging $1100 to do so. No thanks. Looks like I'm back to my original plan. Upgrading the tires and braking system.
Stoptech crossdrilled rotors all around, steel brake lines, better brake fluid, more aggressive pads. Even all of that with installation would cost me a hell of a lot less than a tune. Power can come later.:(

Thanks for the input.

I have seen brz's with intakes and exhaust with no tune and pull the same numbers or worse then a stock brz. The stock numbers are around 160 hp and 140 tq. Once you tune the stock brz your looking at 165-170 hp and then when you add the mods your jumping up to 180's and 190's. The stock ecu tune doesn't let the engine perform any better with intakes or exhaust. The tune will open up the engine and let it perform better.

This is my dyno with mods already installed. Perrin CAI, Nameless Front/over pipe, Namless axle back, Perring Light Weight Crank Pulley. It was at 168 before tune and then jumped to 183 after tune. https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...81444464_n.jpg

Here is a link to a guy that has some bolt ons with an auto and only hits 155 before the tune and then 168 after. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34497

Tires, intake, exhaust, pulley, stage 2 tune = 20+whp and better grip. A winning combo. I believe AFE is the best intake.

@Pbrown honestly, just go with whichever one looks prettier to you -- the difference in performance between the two options will not be noticeable. I just went with a K&N drop-in since the airbox on the twins is good enough on its own for anything NA.

Pbrown 07-07-2013 06:29 PM

interesting

Does the drop in filter qualify the car for the stage 2 Visconti tune?

enwave 07-07-2013 10:18 PM

That's a good question. I don't have the exact answer... But I would assume it would. The airflow is almost identical between it and the full CAI kit. Best to ask someone a little more knowledgeable than me on that one though ;)
