Port of Oakland meet and greet? 7/20?

Hey guys,
I haven't been to many meets (just 1 actually), but was thinking of having one at the port of oakland (where the street races are). There's a nice park with usually plenty of parking, bbq's, and a beautiful view of the city and the bay bridge. I was thinking of a bbq/potluck kind of thing, meet and greet members, etc. for July 20th (Saturday). Just wanted to throw it out there incase anyone is interested. If not, I'll just have to try to get to another meet soon after/before. Here's the website for the park (Middle Harbor Shoreline Park): http://www.portofoakland.com/communit/serv_midd.asp

edit:
So, port of Oakland ( ^ link). This Saturday, July 20th, about 10_30-11am meet up, and we'll start BBQ'ing about 11:30ish? Thanks guys

Cool I think we have enough interest to make it happen! Like I said before we can get there by around 10AM and hopefully that will let us grab a grill to cook around 11-12PM. Does that work for everyone?

@dun3 maybe you can update the first post with event info and time.

roll call - bringing?
PMok - hot dogs, buns
dun3 - burger pattys and buns
BigFatFlip - ???
NorCalGirl - plates, utensils, cups...
rc51ed - ???
omegared19 - ???

(suggestions: charcoal, bbq utensils, drinks, condiments, ice/coolers)

If anyone is interested, we could also do an early morning DRIVE before we roll to Oakland. e.g., Redwood Rd :D

Did you say... street races?

got pics of the parking space and bbq pits?

PMok 07-01-2013 03:43 PM

definitely interested and the date is open for me ... maybe we can even do a short East Bay drive in the morning before arriving there for a BBQ/picnic? I might have time to go scope out the place this week if no one else does.

No, although I should have took some when I was there this weekend. I'll try to go there tonight before dark and snap some shots (if I make it home on time, stupid bart strike). But there is TON's of space, and a crap load of bbq pits/picnic tables, and lots of parking. On top of that, it's really really nice (look's new'ish). This past Sunday there was a muscle car meet there that looked fun. And as long as there's under 200 of us, no need to reserve, just first come first serve basis. When I went this past weekend, there wasn't many people at all, then again it was during the pride weekend, so that might have made it kinda dead. but it's a dope spot, great view, and right on the water.

Also, lot's of cool urban art/street art on the way there.

Edit: did a google search for pics of the park: The pics just about sums it up. Very nice little spot.

BigFatFlip 07-01-2013 04:09 PM

Sounds like fun, although I won't be able to make it on the proposed date, the area is nice, been to a couple of concerts out there, great view of the bay (plus Alameda is just right across!). I'm a little iffy about the parking though, if I remember correctly, the parking lot is not very big and if you do it on a night weekend, our group may have to contend with all the other locals.

Let me know when you go. I can see a photo shoot happening in that area.

Do you want it to be a small informl meet? Or a big formal one?

too short notice to have a formal big one... no time to round up sponsors and vendors etc. by the date that OP proposed. So I'd say let's just do an informal kind of meet and chill thing, and if it turns out to be a good spot we can always return to it for a bigger one.

Yup thats what i was suppose to say. I need at least a month to plan formal meet

dun3 07-01-2013 05:24 PM

a big formal meet would be nice, but yeah it is too late of a notice for that. Something small so we can get together, hang out, throw a football around and eat some food and meet members and talk cars. Nothing too big. But, a big formal meet there would be pretty epic.

omegared19 07-01-2013 05:55 PM

Dude! I'm in!!! Let me know if you guys need help with set up/cooking

denkigrve 07-01-2013 09:14 PM

I'm in. The wife has plans that day so I was going to bachelor it up anyway.

ok! if the parking is good and the surrounding areas then we can have the next formal meet/drive/bbq there sometime in august after the 86 fest

Whoa... you're still around? I thought you stopped hanging out with us now that you have a boyfriend.

dun3 07-03-2013 05:29 AM

^ lol

dun3 07-03-2013 03:18 PM

I'll be going out to the port again this weekend with the lady for a picnic/Frisbee throwing if anyone wants to join. Probably Saturday, but Sunday is a maybe too if I get caught up on Sat.

Re~Mix 07-03-2013 03:42 PM

I could probably swing up from the South Bay and make this. Been too long since I have participated in any meets. Want to see some of those suspension, wheel/tire, and engine setups.

statlab 07-04-2013 03:27 AM

afternoon?

What time were you thinking? I'll be down in Santa Clara earlier in the day but could swing by around 4p.

awww everybody misses Jenny... :brokenheart: :slap:

back to the park. I got a chance to check the place out, it's not a bad venue for a bbq/meet. There are some pretty nice picnic table/bbq areas with very nice views of the city and bay. And plenty of parking for at least 150 cars I'd say. The key of course is getting there early to snag the best picnic areas before everyone else does.

the largest picnic areas (site A, B, and C):
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...8.jpg~original

Site C is the furthest away from the parking lot but has nicest view. And windscreens (it does get windy here).
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...2.jpg~original

A, B and C have large BBQs as well as smaller ones.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...c.jpg~original

From this vantage point you can see the parking lot off to the distance on the left. From here we will not be able to keep an eye on our cars. :(
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...3.jpg~original

This is a smaller picnic area closer to the lot. It has no shade and not as good of a view.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...6.jpg~original

view of the smaller picnic area from the other direction.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...2.jpg~original

Now about the parking lots - there are 2 sections that are the largest areas, adjacent to one another. Neither is very close to the main picnic areas though.

Here is the parking lot closest to the smaller picnic area.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...f.jpg~original

Here is the other lot.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...7.jpg~original

there are many other picnic areas in the park as well, but without bbq grills - this might work for a smaller, bring-your-own-food type gathering.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...6.jpg~original.

there are not too many good vista points from the parking areas, so it's not going to be easy to get any cool "SF as the background" type of shots of your car here on a crowded weekend. Maybe about 10 parking spots that would be ok for this. There were other cars there already so this is the best I could do:
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...7.jpg~original

and lastly, the lovely view from one of the observation decks. :)

yeahhhh xD you will not find parking next to each other hahah and the restaurant will be able to hold like.... 20 people xD lmfao !! jk jk. but seriously. its hella small.

dun3 07-09-2013 04:02 AM

awesome, thanks @PMok for taking pics. I actually emailed the park services and they said if it's parties of 200 or less there's no need to reserve and would be a first come first serve basis, but if it's more we'll need to reserve. Also section C is booked for that weekend (June 20). I figured the turn out wouldn't be more than 10-15 cars? So she said no need for rsvp'ing. But if more then they'll need a heads up and not sure if it entails a fee, which I'm sure it would. But I'm sure a nice organized meet with sponsors and stuff would work out really well there.

yeah most of our "short notice" type of meets & drives get about 10-15 cars and we certainly won't get 200 people haha. Seems like we'd be fine at one of the smaller picnic areas and the one closest to the parking might be best ... however I bet those get grabbed quick too. So yeah let's see who wants to join in on this, and when. Were you thinking morning-lunchtime, or afternoon-dinner time?

Are we ristricted to using their bbq's. if not then I'm sure an easy up, grill and some camping chairs would let us admire each others car closer with some shade. Oh and a table ir two. Just a thought. But I'm in regardless.

I don't see any restrictions on that in the website. This might be one of those "better to ask forgiveness..." type situations haha.

Ahh sweet. And yes, I'm thinking morning (9-10am'ish-noon'ish) give or take.
And LOL, why is everyone so scared of Oakland? I mean, yeah there's at least 1 murder a day (2+ on a normal day) but I absolutely love Oakland. And, the area is passed west Oakland and kind of in the boonies. Either way, it's a pretty sweet spot. Glad to have interest in this spot for a meet. Again, looking at the weekend of July 20th.

I'd still be down for it even if it's a small meetup. We don't have to bbq if people aren't interested, we could bring sandwiches or whatever you want and just chill/eat there.
