Nice job, well thought out and completed - when looking for tips I also liked the Vibrant weld-ons the best but didn't want to weld. Should have used some creativity myself and come up with your solution. But I didn't.

Ended up going with the Perrin tips which install just like yours but without the bushings. It was the easy (but WAY more expensive) route.

Wait so 2.25 will eventually slide off? I have a set coming in tomorrow and didn't think it was gunna be this much trouble...

BlueDubbinTDI 07-01-2013 08:34 AM

Seems like everyone was using 2.25 early on. Do you have a link for those bushings?

Tips look awesome, well done

The screw broke and now idk what to do...

Thanks for the write up! Now if we could just get a DIY to do a weld-free header install.

Thanks for the write up! Great alternative to what's currently available (Not spending $160 for tips). Just ordered the supplies to do the same thing.

You may be able to use this as the proper bushing:

Unfortunately SummitRacing had the wrong description in their catalog so I ended up receiving the 2.375-2.5" adapter. I sliced about 5/16" off, down the length of this piece leaving the rolled lip. The part I ended up with was only $6.99 as opposed to $17.99, so it was all good in the end.

I used the band clamps to squeeze the adapters down so the could fit in the tips. That rolled lip requires a bit of force to reduce the diameter of the adapter..

It fits pretty snug. I just drove the adapter in to the tip until it met up with the rolled end. I didn't slice the exhaust tips at all, though I may if they loosen up. If I do slice them, I'll drill a small hole and then cut to the hole so it is less likely to crack. I used a band clamp but in reality without the slits cut in the tips it probably doesn't add much to the holding power. Some old fashioned muffler clamps would do the trick, but might be more visible. So far so good.

Pros, it looks pretty good and cost almost half the Perrin tips.

Cons, the tips are heavy and they are cantilevered out there a bit, not much clamp area, but they were meant to be welded.

I feel like a bit of a poser, but hey, the stock tips should have looked better!

Edit - I did all this in less than an hour with access to a cut off wheel.

I'm going the weld route tomorrow I think. The stock exhaust tips suck but in order to add other exhaust components you need a serious muffler just to kill rasp ext. My muffler delete was cool and all but it won't allow anything else.

I did mine exactly as the OP did, except I used MagnaFlow 35124 tips. Got the "Bushing" pipe material from AutoZone (see pic for P/N) Only recommendation is to use maybe a 2" T-bolt clamp. The 2.25" T-bolt clamp I got was 2.25" when fully closed, not enough to fully clamp the tips on as tight as I'd prefer. Total cost for this project was about $90

UPDATE: since OP deleted DIY, here is a quick rundown:
-buy weld on tips and cut 4 slots in the back end so that the tip has some flexibility during clamping.
-FRS has an odd exhaust size, (2-1/8" and tips start at 2-1/4") so an adapter is needed. I bought one at autozone that I then cut in half and sliced down the middle.
-use a t-bolt clamp to attach the new tips with adapter to the exhaust. You could trim exhaust as needed, but I just left the 2" expose poking through a little.
