Sonar (Spyder) Tail Light Unboxing and Review
10 Attachment(s)
So after waiting over a month for my Sonar lights to ship I finally received them today. I'm hoping help others make a tail light choice because I know it was a pain in the ass for me to finally find a set I liked.
Spyder lights are basically rebranded Sonar with a mark up. I purchased these from http://www.umnitza.com/sonar-frs-brz...ts-p-6183.html I paid $299 plus another $20 for two day Fed Ex. I plan on doing a red out smoked paint on them in the next few days. I purchased the black with this intent. I do not like chrome under a smoke. I also want the light bar to be a little more red since reviews on the Spyder say they are a little pink during dusk. Lastly I want to make the bright white light bar so obnoxious looking during the day. Package was in great shape. Expanding foam around both of the lights which were packed inside seperate boxes. Attachment 42304 Attachment 42305 Attachment 42306 Quality seems really nice. I was suprised. Almost better than oem in my opinion. Plastic feels just as firm as stock. Lens seems just as nice. Attachment 42311 Attachment 42312 Attachment 42313 These are fused together so no baking them open just the like stock lights. The foam seal I think is better than stock. Its a more dense foam almost like neoprene. It does not have the adhesive section like the stock one has. Attachment 42307 The wires coming out have a butt connector on the yellow and green specifically to allow swapping between US and Jdm wiring. These do have two etched markings on the lower section of the lens on the inside. One is the DOT information and the other is the Sonar label. These are DOT approved since they have the reflector built in which is the circle. Attachment 42308 Attachment 42309 The side reflector on this model is clear unlike the red one on the stock lights. Attachment 42310 As far as Umnitza, I'm not sure I'm happy with them. The website originally stated they had plenty in stock when they technically were not even in the country yet. After my shipping date passed I was told their was a delay due to the container ship experiencing bad weather. The second delay was caused by a hold at the xray at port. I had a valid tracking number sent to me but it never went active in the system until two days ago. They stated they shipped them last week via usps which turned out to be a lie since it was about 5 days later my tracking number went live. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2 |

I'm looking at putting BRIGHT side emitting LED strip lights in the position light tubes to act as DRL in my Sonar tails. Is there an easy way of doing this without taking the lens off? I don't know how much room is in the tube taking into account the existing lights in there. If you've got them apart can you look into it for me?

Good thing they were sitting right next to me. Hopefully this gives you an idea of space

You have no access to the inside without cutting them since they are fused. You could just wire them up differently so they are always on.

So im picking up my paint tomorrow. The the paint shop gives you the option to add your own paint to aeresol cans.
Anyone try this before? How does it compare to a paint gun? Sent from a hamburger |

I've had these taillights for many months and love them. Check my build thread if you'd like to see them.

Having to wait while a mod approves my posts.
In the meantime I need to know how much room is in that tube for a light strip. The side emitting strip I'm looking at is 13mm deep and 7mm wide. Existing position light is not bright enough during the day. What is involved in taking the tail apart to access the tube? Best way. |
I'm waiting on the arrival of a Valenti reversing light, which will hopefully be easier to put a DRL into. This should hopefully negate the need to crack open the Sonar tails, install the LEDs and reseal them. I may still do this depending on how the Valenti goes.
Any update on what you are doing Yruyur? Still very interested in seeing your result and how to. |
