Please email Subaru to stop price markups

Let me start by saying I understand the basic economics behind car markups. My dealership just mentioned, after my order went in, that they will probably be asking over MSRP. Apparently, this was a common occurrence today in other areas. I will not buy the car with a markup.

I believe Subaru has a lot to gain or lose with how they handle the BRZ introduction. Lets attempt to do something about it. It can be as easy as going to subaru.com, clicking contact us and sending a opinion on how you believe Subaru should stop the MSRP markups, or at least put out a request for dealerships to stop. I have already done it.

Subaru has no control over their dealerships.

Pat1usmc 03-01-2012 04:18 PM

understood. Still wouldn't hurt.

Dealerships are private entities. If you want to take the time, go ahead. It's simply a fact of hot releases. You don't want to pay the price? You take your business elsewhere and hopefully that dealership learns. It sucks and I understand that, but Subaru has NOTHING to do with it other than perhaps hyping the car and playing up the "exclusivity" thing.

Consumers are the one with the power. Don't buy a marked up car but we know that won't happen.

Dave-ROR 03-01-2012 04:34 PM

Yep don't buy from those dealers and they will remove the markup.

And while SoA doesn't have authority over dealer's pricing they WILL act on complaints as they build up as it also reflects poorly on Subaru itself.

Supply and demand, if enough people are willing to pay over MSRP, they will charge above MSRP. If you want to avoid this game, try to find a dealership that won't do this. OR wait half a year for the hype to die down and the prices to stabalize.

Wait as second. You didn't negotiate a price respective of MSRP or Invoice before you put down a deposit? My dealer is charging MSRP, and even they admitted that was kind of a bit much.

Unfortunately markups are inevitable.

When prices come out, I plan on calling dealers (within a 100 miles radius) to get a deal closest to MSRP.

If that isn't possible, then I'll wait a few months until the craziness dies down.

In SoCal there is going to be tons of demand, plenty of rich enthusiasts, parents and financially irresponsible people paying 5-10k over sticker, and there's nothing other than waiting and taking our business elsewhere, that we can do about it.

When I was discussing ordering one with my dealer, I said "ok, now let's talk about price". Essentially I said I know prices weren't mentioned, but in respect to MSRP, how does a few hundred under sticker sound? Salesguy responded that they would need full MSRP, and that they would probably be marking them up at first. I told him I would be willing to pay MSRP. He agreed as long as I came in with my deposit (I did, and got it in writing).

If they said they will all have a markup, I would have called another dealer. If they all said that, I would sit back on my couch, enjoy the cars in my garage for another year, and go back next year when they have a few cars on the lot, selling for under MSRP, and you're able to test drive them first. I want this car, but I certainly don't need it.

Pat1usmc 03-01-2012 06:39 PM

In the end I simply cancelled my order and called the next closest dealership. They had an allocation of six cars with no one on the list and they took my order at MSRP.

Done deal. The original dealership lost 2 of us in one day. Now they have zero pre-orders. I don't even want to use them for service now.

maxeveland 03-01-2012 06:41 PM

the only way to 'slightly' avoid markups unfortunately is to wait until the first couple of waves of buyers are done buying

bestwheelbase 03-01-2012 07:26 PM

Better than just reporting it to Subaru, also post here so we can compile a list and put our money where our collective mouth is.

A dealer doesn't care if one guy walks away from a mark-up. But they'll start to get a hint when everybody in town avoids them.

Uh, yes they do.

If a dealer tries to screw with manufacturer policies, they can pull their license. I've seen it happen.

Also, dealers don't actually have control over what cars they can get, if the company says "No cars for you!" They won't get any cars. I've also seen that happen as well.
