Got to check out the FR-S...

**UPDATED WITH VIDEOS**

Got a chance last night to check out the FR-S in person. Took a few snapshots and got a ride in it. This car is sick (as expected)!

I was torn between choosing the Subaru and Scion, but last night's experience made me reconsider the Scion, as I was worried about the quality of materials being cheap compared to the BRZ. Very relieved to see that the FR-S' soft touch plastics are the same as BRZ. Plus I do prefer the front end, gauges of the FR-S over the BRZ. I actually liked the feel of the cloth seats too. Comfy and supportive.

What's awesome is that test car also had TRD exhaust unit on it and my god it sounded amazing.

Also played with the BeSpoke audio unit which is pretty trick but the UX is a little spotty and the iPhone sync crashed a few times in operation. Of note: the BeSpoke system is not a true navigation system. It piggyback's off the iPhone app and pulls data from the phone. So essentially, you can think of the system as a auxiliary monitor that mirrors the iPhone's screen when the app is running. When your car is parked, you can unplug and play with the app remotely on the phone.

Gauges light up beautifully.

The voice prompt was spotty, but then again it could be cause of the ambient noises coming from aroudn the ppl. Also a bummer - the screen is not high-res so the map looks very jagged compared to say... the nav unit in my friend's 4Runner

Yes I sat in the back: All 5'11" of me was able to cram into the backseat and take a joy ride. The guy in front of me is about 5'8" and while my legs are crammed, it's certainly doable to have 4 adults sit in the car but not recommended.

Really cool post man. :coolpics:

tranzformer 02-29-2012 06:45 PM

Thanks for posting the pics. Well done.

just86 02-29-2012 06:46 PM

Very nice, I'm relief that this trd exhaust is available

r4m3n 02-29-2012 06:52 PM

I also recorded a video of the car starting up and revving with the exhaust. I'll upload it after work.

86'd 02-29-2012 06:54 PM

Cool thanks for sharing.

TRD exhaust doesn't really interest me, but it's cool it's there.

I'm more interested in the bespoke system, but wouldn't pay too much for it, as I'd just buy an aftermarket system if it was too much...

MarkRacerX 02-29-2012 07:02 PM

Right on cool stuff!!!

How'd ya get this cool opportunity ?

Thanks for sharing pics / info - I Can't Wait !!!!

Isn't TRD exhaust quad-pipe?

Perhaps the difference between TRD USA and TRD Japan (which are different companies apparently?).

just86 02-29-2012 07:27 PM

this trd exhaust sounds better than the greddy frs exhaust

yayforaddison 02-29-2012 07:31 PM

Good post. Who was the owner of this car tho?

r4m3n 02-29-2012 07:33 PM

Friend of mine works for corporate

Stryker Trailwood 02-29-2012 07:53 PM

so the bespoke HU is just the normal pioneer HU with some software/module tweak.
then Bespoke WILL NOT be the $2k HU option and just a midrange upgrade, which would make it more possible as maybe being a standard HU since its sub-$1k

mines13 02-29-2012 07:58 PM

Very cool, it is good to see some new angles.

Chupacabra 02-29-2012 08:00 PM

I like the exhaust, and all the neat features of the FR-S you were able to real world test and see.

Thank you for a valuable FR-S thread...I was worried these had disappeared. :)

ft86Fan 02-29-2012 08:06 PM

I was told there may be two audio HU options available but that nothing's final and they're still sorting out pricing on these.

86'd 02-29-2012 09:00 PM

I don't know about the FRS's white tach, but if it's anything like my Civic SI's then it turns black in the dark and grey in partial light.

It looks like the same type.

I've gotten comments while driving at night saying, "I thought your gauges were white?" and they're sitting right in front of them. It must be a certain type of material?

there will be at least 2 options available

the pioneer HU you were using in the FR-S is the same one already available in the xB/xD/tC/iQ for a $480 upgrade, it just doesn't have Bespoke added to it. the base HU the FR-S has had is also the same.

the normal scion NAV option available now that is $2k has a 7" touch screen and on board NAV and DVD playback, they wouldn't charge $2k for the Bespoke HU if it doesn't include as much.
Scion Has offered a mid range HU option for $500 before that could have a NAV module added to it for extra cost that ended up less then half of buying the $2k unit

poormans_LFA 02-29-2012 10:31 PM

Looks really really good. Awesome post!! Thanks!!!:happy0180:

GodSays 02-29-2012 11:41 PM

Soooo the FR S will have red stitching? :w00t:

Double4Free 02-29-2012 11:43 PM

Waiting to see that TRD exhaust note

Thanks for the info though

Mr.Jay 02-29-2012 11:49 PM

Hopefully it still sounds as nice as it did in that other vid on a 86

Can't wait for more of these kind of threads

Only thing holding me back on you is the Leather and HID's/DRL combo. If price is a factor, then what the hell, I'll go with FRS

I live in chicago. Chicago winters + leather without seat warmers = a cold butt so I can live without leather :P

As for the HID, pop the hood, take out the halogens, pop in a HID conversion kit. I do wish they offered the LED eyebrows though here :[

Well the Leather/Alcantara combo. BTW I'm pretty sure the BRZ will have seat warmers.

Same here, I want the HID/DRL combo. I think maybe next production year may release them.

It all depends on the BRZ/FR-S price difference to see if those few differences will be worth the difference in price. I do hope they have DRLs at least as an add on option. I mean if its only JDM, that's a tiny fail, but a fail ill live with :P

Kuzuri 03-01-2012 12:06 AM

i thought the FR-S seats were alcantara, and the BR-Z was leather sides/alcantara center? also, is this color Asphalt or Raven? somewhere i read that raven may be metallic black?...

anyway, the first pic looks black, but the second looks like asphalt to me... so im just curious!

unless.... IMPORT ALL THE THINGS!!

Price right now for me is the determinating factor. (I think for more than half the other member aswell :/ )

I think its raven, but I could be wrong.

I know it seems a bit ricer, but there is just something about LED DRLs like the ones on the audi that just look hella nice to me.

just86 03-01-2012 12:55 AM

looking forward to that trd exhaust sound clip

No they're cloth seats. Only one with leather/alcantara is the BRZ Limited or the GT86 overseas....

It's Raven. But the car was very dirty when I saw it. From what I recall, it appeared to be metallic black finish.

FR-S seats are cloth. The BRZ Premium is cloth; Limited is alcantera/leather

Also sorry for the delay in getting the vids up. I got class tonight after work...

KidWonder 03-01-2012 05:25 AM

You're 5"11 and got into the backseat?

The backseat must be larger than it actually looks.

You sure? Theres pics floating around with a visibly noticeable white background tach, and others like the press pics with a grey background tach.

Ill just take the standard fugly stereo. Cuz im just gonna swap that out for a aftermarket HU anyways :)
