OMG...I HATE MYSELF! (Self Wash Scratch!!)

Guys I am so sorry if there is a post related to this, but I am kind of panicking now because I think I just scratched my hood while washing. The scratch isn't deep since I can only feel it when I use my nails to touch it. Other than that, it seems fine when my finger goes through it. How can I get rid of scratches like this?? Thank you all!!!

To prevent scratch while washing. Use the 2 bucket method.

Depending how deep it is, you may be able to the scratch (or most of it) with polishing the area. There are rubbing compounds that you can use.

Some buffing with a microfibre cloth and a light polish will do the trick. Looks like you have simply scratched the clear coat. I use Prima products for my car. They sell three different polishes I believe, and you could get the one called Finish which would prob work just fine for a surface scratch like that.

you can catch with your finger nail = it's done. you may polish it to diminish it but it's going to be there unless repaint.

Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0 will eliminate any clearcoat scratches... It's hard to tell if it went thru the paint cus your cars black, but maybe give it a shot.

Based off your questions, you are new to the automotive finish world. The others are trying to help however, there is a slight oversight... Take it to a pro before you "swirl the sh**" out of it!

This + 1

Thank you all!! I will take it to a detailer before any further action.
Otherwise I may have to start another thread with the topic "how to fuked up your paint"

Good luck!

My dealer did something similar the first time they washed my car after I bought it. I had no clue they were cleaning it, but I sure as hell saw the scratches when I got home. Thankfully, the car is white and I can't really seem them unless I am in the perfect light. Oh well....it is a DD and I'm sure she will get more.

You'd know if it was raven :)

Being a DD it probably will. You should still take your car to a good detailer, or if you're good at detailing do it yourself. That should take care of most, if not all, of the the scratches. The car will look more amazing. At least for a while.

My bad, statement still holds true tho :)

To cement it home...this will need a machine to reduce it's appearance, but again, if you can catch your nail on it, it's never going away. Good luck on your trip to the detailer.

How does this product work? just wondering how these components can get rid of the scratch?

I don't know the science behind it, but from my experience, it works miracles.

I had taken off my sharkfin antenna b/c I plan on wrapping my roof. I left it in the backseat and my friend sat on it. It had over 100 scratches on it. Spent like an hr with Scratch X and it looks brand new.

Basically, if the scratch isn't through the clearcoat, a polish (like Scratch X) or compound (heavier duty) the product removes clearcoat around the scratch until things are level and there isn't a scratch anymore, just slightly thinner clearcoat.

You have to be careful as trying to remove a scratch that is too deep will leave you with no clear, which requires a full respray to fix. ScratchX is very mild and your chances of doing that are super slim, especially if you try to do it by hand.

Cheers
Nathan

I'm honestly not too worried about it. I was frustrated by their carelessness, but such is life. I like my cars clean, but I'm not one to worry about every little scratch. The car will be doing autox and some open track eventually, so it could potentially get a lot worse :burnrubber:

I figured, I'd give her a good detail at 100k miles if I still own her.

You should detail your car at least once a year to protect the paint.

:). I wax it once a month, condition the plastic same time. I clay my cars every 6 months. This one is almost due for her first clay. Engine is spotless, and car is washed once a week. I should have been a little better with my wording, when i said detail, i was thinking "paint correction". My bad :)

People always make fun of me because i take such good care of my cars. Oh well, i could have worse traits. Lol

HeubergerMotors 06-19-2013 07:21 PM

Looks like it can be fixed, easily if done properly.

It's all good

I have a friend that's the same way.
