Paint issue, not rail rust.

Anyone else notice spots beginning to show on their hood, roof, and trunk? Looks like the paint is pulling up from the primer, and the clear is lifting off. More and more show every week, and once they show, they begin to expand. Looks terrible. It's not something like bugs, tar, or sap on the paint or clear coat surface. Only 1700 miles, garage kept. Thoughts?

My thoughts are you need to take it back and have it looked at by a dealer. I haven't seen a single other 86 do anything like that.

If you can get some good shots of what you're seeing it would probably greatly assist in identifying the issue! Sorry to hear that you're having paint issues though... Considering how new your car is with the mileage you're in a great position to work with the dealer on a solution as the warranty should cover manufacturing defects in the paint.

PAutoX 06-18-2013 04:33 PM

Haha I was expecting that response. I'll see if I can get some good ones, kinda hard to see on the pics I have taken so far.

The dealer said it's probably acid rain...

However they sent me to a collision repair shop up the street, and they said it looks like factory defect. I'm waiting for a call back from the toyota/scion rep so he can come take a look at it.

Can you push on the defects? Are they like bubbles?

FRiSson 06-18-2013 04:58 PM

I have sort of slight cloudy spots/smears, that don't clean off. Is that what you are seeing?

PAutoX 06-18-2013 06:53 PM

I do have a few of those cloudy spots/smears as well, but these are different.

Not quite bubbles, but in the worst spots the paint is definitely chipping/peeling away from the primer underneath.

I'll see if I can get some better pics tonight under the right lighting with a good camera.

PAutoX 06-18-2013 08:32 PM

I've got to get a better camera...but here are a few on the roof, but it's like this all over the hood, roof, and trunk:

Any sign of impact?

PAutoX 06-18-2013 09:04 PM

Not that I can tell, but I'm no expert. These are just a couple examples, it varies in severity all over the car.

I am having this exact issue with my raven frs. I took it to the dealer yesterday and they took pictures and are sending it to someone higher up in the service dept to see if they will fix it. The Service manager that looked at it was trying to play it off as environmental damage. Never seen a cars paint come off from bird shit being on the car for a couple of days, especially one this new. Quote from the dealers body shop was $3800. http://i.imgur.com/ULW7jUZ.jpg

Wow, that sucks. I'm no expert but it looks like uncured paint to me.

Me neither, but with this car, it only takes a few hours for the bird shit damage to be permanent. I clean off any droppings I see on my car as soon as I see them, but if I don't see them until I get out of work, it is already too late! I have three such spots on my car so far. ...And I started keeping a bottle of quick-detailer with me at all times!

Thanks for your post. That is exactly like mine...I knew the paint quality was poor but that is ridiculous! I have never had this issue before. I detailed cars for 5 years and never noticed anything that bad.

I am waiting to hear back from the regional scion rep to set up an appointment so that he can come out to see the car. I'll be sure to let you know what he says.
