Quick Comparo>>> Perrin vs. Motiv Overpipes
Hey everyone, we picked up Motiv Concepts products not too long ago and got some of their products in house. We are highly impressed by the quality of the products they are producing. Big thumbs up to the guys over at @MotivConcepts  Just wanted to take a quick minute to compare the Motiv Concepts overpipe with the Perrin Performance overpipe. We took some side by side photos and glanced over some of the minute differences in the two products. Perrin quality is very tough to beat and that is the same case here, but Motiv just takes a couple extra steps to ensure that there are no corners cut on their overpipe. Notice the extra weld on the inside of the flanges on the Motiv piece along with the outside weld on the flange. Both pieces have their added bits of flair with the Perrin having a branded flange and Motiv having a printed plaque with serial number tack welded onto their piece. Other than that, the only other difference is what else you get in the box and the ~$30 you keep in your pocket from going with Motiv. Some reasons why the Perrin costs more??? 1.) Flanges are CNC machined from 1/2" 304ss to reduce warpage and leakage over a long life. 2.) Flanges have a CNC'ed inside lip to compensate for the thickness of the tube. This eliminates the inside lip that can cause air flow disturbance. 3.) They use expensive OEM grade multi layer crush gaskets for a sure seal that will last. Onto the pictures :coolpics: Motiv piece http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/Motiv_Overpipe-1.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/Motiv_Overpipe-2.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/Motiv_Overpipe-3.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/Motiv_Overpipe-7.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/Motiv_Overpipe-6.JPG Perrin piece http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...Overpipe-1.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...Overpipe-2.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...Overpipe-3.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...Overpipe-4.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...Overpipe-5.JPG Side by Side http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...VS_Motiv-1.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...VS_Motiv-2.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...VS_Motiv-3.JPG Notice the weld on the inside lip, again the attention to detail is amazing here with Motiv. http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...VS_Motiv-4.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...VS_Motiv-5.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...VS_Motiv-6.JPG http://ft86speedfactory.com/images/P...VS_Motiv-7.JPG |
Everyone on this forum seems to chat up "beautiful welds" whenever new exhaust hardware gets posted.
The welds on the motive piece here are something to aspire to, truly. Those are good welds. |

I forget the technical term but the Perrin piece almost looks like the welds on the flanges were done by doing individual little spots all the way around as opposed to properly working the bead. Rather large divots between each "dime." Might not be the case, but the Motiv definitely has the superior welds of the two. I'm sure functionally both are fine. :)

so which is better? the Perrin has better gaskets but the motiv has better welds? how do you chose?

With Perrin you have 1.) Flanges are CNC machined from 1/2" 304ss to reduce warpage and leakage over a long life. 2.) Flanges have a CNC'ed inside lip to compensate for the thickness of the tube. This eliminates the inside lip that can cause air flow disturbance. 3.) They use expensive OEM grade multi layer crush gaskets for a sure seal that will last. With Motive you have $30 extra bucks and still a damn good product. Hard to not recommend either. |
I personally want to chime into this here. Yo, over at f86speedfactory got me into the motiv concepts with my hks el header setup. I was slightly worried because I haven't heard about motiv, but holy wow for the money that your paying vs the quality, the motiv concepts looks EFFIN AMAZING in person! The fit is perfect too! my muffler guys that installed my motiv overpipe and front pipe were saying that it was a perfect fit!
For those of you that are worried about the overpipe rubbing on the subframe or sway bars, which I'm running the cusco thickest sway bar, there is enough clearance that you can shove your fist in there. Motiv FTW! just fyi, my setup thanks to ft86speedactory, hks equal length header, motive overpipe, motive front pipe and ark grip catback. perfect fitment. |
Not owning ether, but leaning to Perrin. Both are works of art!! You could have ether on a coffee table as a conversation piece.

Just want to pipe up regarding the Motive over pipe. It's a quality item, but I have concern with the double weld on the inside of the flanges and the outside of the flanges. This 'may' be of concern as a cracking point from thermal expansion leading to fatigue over time. This may not be of concern in the lifetime of the car for 99% of people, but it was a slight concern to me. Please note, I'm not suggesting it's a poor quality item, it's excellent quality, just keep that in mind.

and is there any difference in the sound?

Would be interesting to check weight of the both pieces on the same scale. Also, very interested which one allows more clearance vs. the front sway bar. If anyone had experience with installing both - would be very interesting to hear!
