noob question regarding after market exhaust

sorry for stupid question...

I know in order for exhaust to be legal is that it has to pass the air pollution exam (forgot the name...) also has to be 92db or lower at 5500rpm.

now my question is, for all the exhaust mentioned here, if i leave my cat on, are they all legal and able to pass those tests ?

Keep your stock exhaust. Use it for smog. Any exhaust mod is illegal in CA, but most cops ignore that unless you have a farting can and drive like a douchebag.

Also, there are smog places could hook u up for passing the test.

so even if i kept my cat on, with an after market exhaust, I'll still fail smog test ??

No, you shouldn't strictly speaking on the emissions aspect. The cats are the only things that are doing any kind of "air purification," if you will. A catback would not be replacing either cat or creating any further pollution. The only thing it'll be doing is creating more noise due to the design and removal of the muffler.

speaking of modifying exhaust being illegal in California. .. doesn't trd exhaust consider after market then. .. what makes them not illegal. ..

Catbacks aren't illegal. Changing anything before the catalytic converter is.
