So my key FOB was put in the washing machine....

...And it surprisingly still works perfectly. Happened a couple weeks ago, left them in my jeans and passed them through the wash cycle. I have the actual key with fob, not the keyless entry fob.

glad to see something was made to last!

That's nothing, I took a dip into the hot springs full of minerals, salts and other savoury flavours, forgetting that I had my key in my trunks after I grabbed my flipflops from my car. Still works like a champ.

Electronics aren't inherently damaged by water—it's the short-circuiting that happens when power is applied that does the damage. :)

What if you drop an iPhone (or another smartphone) already turned off into water, then turn it back on only after everything has dried?

Ditto...if they get spoiled ziplocking them with some white rice or a bowl of rubbing alcohol will usually dry up the water. I've learned a lot about drying water out of electronics by owning a Jeep :bonk:

Did you just put your Jeep in a big pool of rice?

As long as it didn't corrode it should be fine.

The fobs and keyless fob have a rubber gasket that seals the actual electronics when the two halves are clicked together. I've taken mine apart a few times, just messing around mostly. On another note, it would be soooo easy for apple to spray there electronics with a water resistant coating like some R/C electronics are. My R/C truck is water proof! And with the brushless technology now being dominant they are also becoming quite water resistant if not completely water proof too.

That would take away from the incentive to buy AppleCare

It will corrode.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong because my last chemistry class was 5 years ago, but I'm pretty sure pure water is NOT conductive, but rather the salts/impurities etc found in water actually carries the current. I think pure, de-ionized water can be used to rinse of electronics safely. I think.
