BRZ Colour Choice

Sent an email to Subaru Canada requesting more choice of exterior colour for 2014. I don't see why Canadians should be short changed in this regard as all cars are built in the same factory.

Because we have a smaller buyer pool. More combinations of colour and trim level = higher costs to the manufacturer.

If they don't do anything else to the car for 2014 they will at least almost certainly offer a new colour - hopefully something completely new.

I agree with you - it's all coming off the same line so economies of scale don't apply, unless there are distinctive features on Canadian models that require different factory setups. Only thing I can think of that is different are the standard heated mirrors on the base model...

Wish we had the red.
I would've loved to get the red....

I just received a reply from Subaru Canada and they advise that they have heard that there is a potential for additional colours for the vehicle in 2014. They also stated that they expect to hear shortly regarding the 2014 vehicle.

It would be cool if they had different colors...

... other than the ones on the FR-S. Scion has the grey, dark blue, red, the BRZ should get 1 or 2 different colors themselves.

I'm told by someone that works in the industry that our paint colours differ because some paints have chemicals in them that are NOT approved for Canada. The paints that have silica in them come to mind...

So, that is the real reason. It doesn't cost them more to paint a car a different colour when that colour is already available and ready to go. It's because of our environmental laws.

Americans still use freon in many of their car air conditioners. We haven't used that in over a decade.

please explain how it is that Scion has all the colours then. as we all know both cars are made in the same factory and presumably using the same paint systems.

None of the Scion colours have silica in them. Silica is a level 1 carcinogenic. I can't speak to why the red isn't offered, but Galaxy Blue Silica and Crystal Black Silica are not permitted here. It's not a conspiracy to give us fewer colour choices and piss us off.

I did mention the silica aspect in my initial post... just saying...

You mean Raven and Ultramarine... they are the same thing as the BRZ equivalent.

Sasquachulator 06-26-2013 06:16 PM

beh WRB is the only colour you need on a BRZ.

You just gotta see one in person to know what I mean.

I very much doubt the paint formulations are different for Canada/US. The expense of getting Ultramarine/Galaxy Blue Silica and Raven/Crystal Black Silica to look identical in both countries with different formulations, not to mention the expense of constantly changing out their paint operations, would be prohibitive. If silica is really banned here I bet those paints don't really contain silica in Canada (or the US) - it would have been much cheaper for Scion to simply drop them from its Canadian lineup, like Subaru did.

Just confirmed it - for the first vehicle I checked, I immediately found a silica paint currently available in Canada - Crystal Black Silica on the 2013 Subaru Outback. So the OP's reasoning is complete :bs: .
