Racing harness
Sorry if this is in the wrong area. I tried searching.
It looked like you could use the child seat anchor for a four point harness but if you do that the driver seat belt light and alarm will go off is there a way around that or do you have to unplug the fuse? Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 4 Beta |
4 point is a big no no in my book, at least for the track.
|
Why is that? Would you do a 5 or leave it stock?

Either do it proper or don't do it at all imo. 4 point harness are frowned upon for various reasons. Also I'd suggest using a harness bar not the child anchors. I believe the child anchors are only rated for a small amount of weight, not for a full adult

I have a Schroth Rallye 4 which is has their ASM (anti-submarine) technology which I mainly use for autocross but have done a couple track days with. The Sparco 4-point are just normal belts and are the ones people generally ban from track events.
I have it bolted to the seatbelt mounting points. |
I may be wrong, but I thought that any 4 point or 5 point harness without a full roll bar was a no-no. The reason being if the car flips, a regular seat belt will let you buckle over; a 4/5 point will keep your head in place while it is pile driven into the ground.
Even if you had a cage, you want to mount it properly, the child safety anchors are for child seats. Although, in my WRX I had a 3-point mounted there for autocross only. I would never use it for track / driving on the street. |
I did it the right way before with a roll cage on my last car and it caused problems with the interior. Granted i did a lot more but i would like to leave the inside stock but still feel held in place.

OK, so about a month ago, I was convinced that a Schroth with ASM was the way to go. Then I did research and posted about it. Then I was schooled.
Saw some photos from crashes. NOT GOOD! Harness bars are not roll cage bars. They can move A LOT in a crash. If a harness bar moves forward a foot, your belts slip over and god knows where you're going to end up, but probably submarined or out the window. Definitely in pieces. Anchoring to the child seat tether won't work since you weigh far more than those anchors are designed for. Anchoring to the seatbelt anchor won't work because the angle is wrong. So like a couple others said: Go big or go home. Either use the stock safety system completely or put in a 5/6 six point seat, belt, and cage. I'm not even sure if a half-cage is a good idea at this point. If you really want a wholehog track car, I'd buy a Formula something or other. It'll be faster more fun, uncompromised, and allow real racing. It might even be cheaper in the long run. And of course, if you put in a full cage, you'll need a helmet on the street. |
If you're not putting a roll bar with a race seat in the car, and wearing a hans device, leave the stock belts, you'll be safer.

This is one of those "all or nothing" situations. Doing it half-assed will do more harm than good.

If you want to be a little more snug, pick up a CG lock.
http://www.cg-lock.com/ While I like the feel of a 5 point harness in a race car, it's ridiculous (and probably illegal) in a street driven car. IMO, for a race car, it's all or nothing. |
Thanks all for the help I'll leave it as is.
