Electric fuel pump running with car off???

So... I think this has happened twice with my FRS

The car is sitting in the garage not running.

I open the driver's door to get something from inside the car and as soon as the door opens and door glass moves down, I hear a buzzing noise from the rear of the car.

Locking, unlocking the car with key fob does nothing to stop the buzzing.

If I put the key in the ignition switch and turn it to the on position (not starting) and turn it off, the buzzing stops.

What could this be? A relay going nuts or the fuel pump running (but why, how?)

I cannot reproduce this at will so this is all the info I have at the moment.

Ideas?

Fuel system is priming anticipating you to start vehicle. It just now did it to me so I started car and turn it off. Unlock and lock don't turn it off for me either. I'm hoping this is normal

Mine does this in the middle of the night for no reason. Always has.

Sure its not the evap system doing its thing?

I heard mine too.. It happens approx 5 hours after you turn it off..
Does some maint and checks for the fuel evap system ..
all normal but weird to hear it running. what's next?

It's nothing to worry about, its just the evaporative system doing its job !
A lot of the times evap system require events to actuate a system check. For example
1- key on engine running for 20 or more minutes for three cycles
2- vehicle at rest for more than three hours
3- ambient temp 30degrees or more.

This is just an example as to what might set it off.
I don't know the specific parameters of the FRS/BRZ .

I hope this helps.

I think I remember reading in the manual about that, it says it's normal and gives a time frame. I'm not near my car but if someone has some time I think it's in the manual that comed with the car

Well, that's a relief! I was hoping it wasn't some weird electrical short. Thanks.

It's normal. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16534

Taken from that thread.

Here's what BRZ's manual says:

Noise from under vehicle after turning off the engine

Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound
coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel
evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction.
The FR-S manual says the same thing.
