STYGIAN FRS – THE BOOSTED BOXER

Posted by josh on Jun 02, 2013 in feature, Proper
Its a sunday, a rainy one. The drops pitter patter outside the window and the sound of distant thunder rumbles beyond the darkened and swollen clouds. After heating up some instant udon and powering up the mac its time write a bit about a car that holds a very unique place in the desire lobes of my frontal cortex. The FRS/FT86/BRZ are what some would consider the latest craze in tuner platforms and theres honestly no denying its true. It seems that almost every day now theres a new rocket bunny equipped FRS/BRZ etc blowing up on the internet via tumblr feeds and overcrowded Facebook pages recycling content incessantly. That being said, how does one stand out in a sea of constant change. If there is anything Ive learned in the last 4 years that Proper Garage first synapsed in my mind, it’s this. A blogs/sites/pages/brands legitimacy should never be determined by the number of likes one has obtained, yet instead by the quality of work yielded both past present and future.

This so happens to be why we shot the car you see here but we’ll get back to that in a moment. Anthony is what I would consider a carbon copy of my brain placed into another body with the knowledge and know how of putting together a functional and visually stimulating build. Anthony works for a shop notorious for its high horsepower evos and well put together hondas. Inline Racing has been a huge contributor to the Houston street scene since I first got in the game many years ago.

There are quite a few things here which hint at its subtle performance tweaks to an already near perfectly balanced chassis. Among the things you might see are the 4 pot Brembos borrowed from a 2004 STi donor car and the large polished FMIC perfectly centered and tucked away behind the bumper.

Every duct, scoop, curve, bulge, and bend culminate into what I think is one of the best looking cars to ever come out of a collaboration between automakers and yes that includes the abomination of Holden and Pontiac. Subaru and Toyota got it right on the money if you ask me.

Seibon carbon fiber front lip, side skirts, and rear valences round out and give the car an impressive appearance.

As the sun begins to sink behind the buildings she gives up her secrets in the form of flares. The best time for capturing images just before sunset.

Custom blacked out head lights, carbon fiber splitter JDM toyota badging, and the massive polished intercooler give the car a dark and somewhat sinister vibe. Im infatuated.

Turn the car to the rear and you will notice more subtle pieces. Spider black housing tail lamps painted red with JDM toyota rear deck spoiler and lastly a diffuser taken from the close cousin of the FRS (the BRZ) give the car a complete rear end.

Bride Maxis 3′s peak out from the cockpit. Although these seats create a terrible blind spot I intend on nabbing a pair for my circuit build STi.

A closer look at the tail lights and JDM badging. (insert inline racing shameless plug)

Street art meeting the art of the street, one of my favorite shots from this batch of captures.

18″ Rota Grids with 18×8.5 +44 up front and the rear at 18×9.5 +3

Blox FR-S Red Shifter, JDM TRD Push Start Button, NRG Short Hub, NRG Quick Release, Momo Steering Wheel, and Bride Maxis III Seats adorn the cockpit of our friends FRS. For the times he doesnt want to hear the spool from his turbine, Anthony employed a Pioneer BH3400 Double Din Radio to fill the cockpit with the sounds of justin beiber and one direction.

I L R / T U N E D

Speed Factory FT 86 strut tower brace keeps things rigid in the bay.

Alas, we get to the soul of the car. The FA20 boxers peaky output is assisted via an Inline Racing Turbo Kit (Garrett 60-1 w/ Stage 3 wheel). Inline racing 3in up pipe and down pipe insure that the exhaust gases are delivered to and from the turbine in a smooth and orderly fashion. Boost is kept under control via an HKS electronic unit and is cooled via an Extreme Turbo Systems custom front mount intercooler.

O P U L E N C E / C R E W repping.

stygian, dark and sinister are the words I choose to convey the vibe this car emulates. We’d like to say a huge thanks to Anthony Do and his Girlfriend for putting up with his habit and also to INLINE RACING for a truly awe inspiring build. Be on the lookout for future works from PROPER GARAGE and INLINE RACING right here in the H.

And we digress back to what I started writing about earlier relative to likes, followers, and legitimacy. Proper Garage is a blog bringing the experiences of 11 people together on this tiny piece of the web. We do our own shoots and have never outsourced our work to other photographers by choice. Our social media feeds are filled with our daily findings and captures of things surrounding our lifestyle and always striving to avoid what I have called for a while the “tumblr” complex. We encourage those who are inspired by us and others to go out and explore. Take your own photos, and learn to edit: create your own style. Don’t be content following people who do little more than scour the web for other peoples work and recycle it on their pages for others to see. Ultimately it is up to you to choose whom you wish to follow but we encourage you to choose whom you follow wisely. Until the next one, stay proper and keep it legit.

Always admired your build dude! I remember a while ago you were talking about getting some legit wheels for the show circuit, still thinking about it?

Sexy. The blacked headlights are exactly what I wanted to do to my car. Which guide did you use?
