Question about exhaust?
 

Hey guys, I just wanted to get more knowledge on things like this but I live in CA and when I get a BRZ I plan on getting the Perrin Catback Exhaust, however, it sounds wonderful with the front pipe as well and I was wondering, is that CA legal to get it with a front pipe? I don't want it to be smog illegal and etc lol thanks in advance, sorry I'm not a car tech guy :/

Removing a catalytic converter is indeed illegal in California. In fact replacement of a catalytic converter of another kind other than factory (except for magnaflow's), is illegal, and to top it all off, even removal of the factory piece in replacement to another AREA of the exhaust is illegal. California has the most strict emissions standards, so the answer is yes, it is illegal...



But that hasn't stopped me as well as probably the thousands upon thousands to modify cars who do it, lol.

in california it's safer to just presume your not allowed. that goes for just about everything, except medical weed lol. think like if north korea and jamaica were to have a baby.

j/k, but for real no. you can't do much of anything we all enjoy in california legally.

Haha, yeah that's basically about it. Honestly though, since California law states that you don't have to get a NEW vehicle smogged for 5 years, that will give you some time to play around with the car before you have to start figuring out what the best plan is to put the stock cats back in. Honestly replacing that front pipe isn't too hard, you can easily do it yourself too, so I just say go for it, enjoy the car!

lol i assumed it'd be so, it's a bummer cali had to be like this :/ kinda wish I lived in places like PA or something just so you can have more fun modding the car lol but hm another question then, what about the over pipe? That doesn't have a cat does it? i'd assume thats illegal too tho LOL

Id keep the stock. Just in case you receive a fix ticket, and you need to show that.

Running without front plate is expensive nowadays in CA. Just saying if you plan to do so.

I live in PA, I still have to switch out my Front pipe to stock so it isn't "High Flow" if I want to pass here.

You should move to WV. We have almost non existent emmissions laws. We technically are not supposed to go cat less, but most shops just dont give a shit. Lol

I'm getting one as well. Are you getting resonated or non resonated? If the non resonated is a tad loud, I would go non resonated.

I have no clue about intakes. Sorry. I'm assuming if you change your intake and get it tuned, you would optimize the performance.
Is intake supposed to increase the air flow? I keep that later after I upgrade my catback system :)

in the future im thinking of going perrin resonated. I love the way it sounds with front pipe, but since it's illegal i probably won't want to go through the trouble. I don't want it too loud either, don't want to attract unwanted attention lol

CAIs are really good for airflow, makes it smoother i guess, makes your engine sound louder, and supposedly a lil better mpg. But i researched and haven't found a legal intake yet. Injen's look really nice, but not legal in CA. Not sure what happens if someone gets pulled over for it though lol

I would say do it, I live in Cali and I have friends with front pipes and overpipes, you technically still have a cat so I wouldnt worry, there are people here that run test pipes. Plus, when smog comes around if anything just switch the front pipe back to stock (fairly quick and easy to swap) and just leave the overpipe.

As for intakes it isn't hard to switch back to stock if you don't pass. That or just wait for a CARB legal intake, but they do tend to cost a bit more

do you know any carb legal intakes yet? lol i've been searching but haven't found one.
