1000 dollar deposit first in line for a whiteout FR-S

1000 dollar deposit first in line for a whiteout FR-S... Good or Bad deal?

Dark 02-18-2012 07:21 PM

If it's refundable, I don't think it's that bad.

ACHlLLES 02-18-2012 07:24 PM

What's there to good or bad about deposit?

Kuzuri 02-18-2012 07:24 PM

I think this a dealership level decision, no hard and fast rule. I put down $1,000 down on a BRZ with my dealer. Good luck to both of you with your new rides.

Bad if it's not refundable.

My dealer actually cashed my check, which I consider to be a very good thing since it gives more weight to my written quote.

ohh ok gotcha!

If you really want a white one then I guess it is your only deal. Don't be surprised if you have to wait 4 or 5 months though to get a white one as the dealer probably isn't going to have a color choice on the initial launch. at the 2 per month # that seems to be gaining more factual basis, it could be awhile until they get a white car with the transmission you want.

I don't see too many dealers being interested in trading vehicles as they can just sell to another customer who is willing to take the color they have on hand so I wouldn't put too much stock in that either.

How does all this work i just recorded the phone call using speaker phone and my cell phones recording device and gave them my credit card number over the phone he said he would not charge it until the point of sale if i decide to buy and im goin in on Monday to sort out the fine details, I already gave them my preference of whiteout and a manual transmission... Do they actually call Toyota and say "Hey, I would like to order a Whiteout Scion FR-S with manual transmission", or is it more like, if the one they get doesnt meet my expectations they shop around other dealerships for a whiteout manual FR-S... Please Explain I've never done this, pre-order a car before.:iono:

Good that they took your money over the phone and you were able to document it but bad since you're shooting blanks by putting a deposit on a car w/out an official price.

You gave your credit card number to somebody over the phone?

The dealer I am dealing with also does not know when or if they are going to be able to order the first batch. I will find out next week.

Did you inform them that you were recording the call? I believe it's illegal in many states to record a phone conversation w/ informing the person you're speaking with: http://www.citmedialaw.org/legal-gui...-conversations.

Edit: I see you're in Texas, as am I. I was curious about our phone recording laws and according to this it looks like you're actually safe recording your phone call. I wish I had recorded mine!

Of course I could just be talking out my ass :D

BTW, I asked the dealership if I could put down $300 and they let me. I figure if the deposits really are refundable the deposit amount shouldn't really matter. Why should a higher amount make me more serious or committed if I can just take the money back at any time?

Normally, when you order a car they put in an order to toyota and the car gets built, put on a boat, and then shipped to the dealership with their other cars once it hits CA. Since this is a pre-order I doubt it will work this way. More than likely subaru and scion will be letting dealers know what they can have color/trans wise and if that dealer doesn't want it then they will move on to another dealership. It is unlikely that any dealer would pass up their position in line though since that might delay when they get cars and usually they want them as soon as possible.

We(as in dealerships) can preference vehicles from Toyota. So the dealership you ordered from can ask for your specific vehicle and Toyota will send that car first. I have 3 preferenced FR-S's already for 3 different customers, 1 blue manual, 1 black manual, 1 gray auto.
