Bumper not lining up near fender?

I've seen quite a few 86's with this issue. Does anyone know what causes it or a good trick to fixing it? I can push it back in and it looks like it's lined up, but after driving again it reverts to its previous state.

That's normally what happen after taking the bumper off, just as you have done.

yep.. Same issue here as well. Bugs the shit out of me, hope there is a fix for this!

So a body panel is a single use part? HArd to believe, especially since it did this before removal as well. Has to be an install issue or something else.

Replace the clip behind the side markers with a zip tie. Worked for me. Easier to remove in the future too.

i just ordered new mounting brackets (the ones that bolt under the headlights, as well as all new bumper hardware (plastic clips/fasteners). We'll see if that helps.

are you talking about the inner clip that goes through the side marker bracket up into the fender? or the clip that goes through the outside of the fender liner to the back side of the light?

retrosmiths 05-28-2013 03:53 PM

The former.

FWIW, here is the part number for the plastic brackets that the bumper attaches to (under the headlights). They're about 21 bucks each.

Right side: 57707CA001
Left side: 57707CA010

Note: I don't know if this will help or not, but it's worth a shot.

Any chance you have a pic of how you routed your zip tie? I tried a couple angles but nothing really seemed right.

Pull the fender lining away after removing that outer clip. Route the zip tie from above (or from below). Of course, the inner clip has to be removed first.

My problem might actually be an install issue. My suspicion is that when the bumper skin was replaced after hitting a cone on the highway, the body shop used the wrong fasteners that secure the corner of the bumper by the side marker. The fasteners in there now look nothing like the one in this photo from DarrenDriven

I'm waiting on a full resolution shot to confirm, but hopefully that's the cause. I've got the correct part on order from Subaru. If it fixes the issue I'll be sure to update.

My car has same issue, both sides, it will "snap" into place there under the light but soon slips back out
