6000-7000 RPM 3rd-4th Gear Noise

I have about 1500 miles on my FR-S now and I have started to hear a noise between 6000-7000 rpm when accelerating in 3rd or 4th gear. My best description of it is the noise a table saw makes when it begins to cut into a material (right when the teeth start to barely nick the materials surface). It's no where near as loud as that, just similar. I don't hear it in the same rpm range when in 1st or 2nd, might be there but I don't stay in them long...

Once I pass 7000RPM in either gear that makes the noise it ceases unless I let it coast back down to that RPM range again. Besides the noise it makes everything else seems to be in perfectly working order; no excess vibrating or power loss.

Anyone else getting this?

Not sure what it is....but it really could just be something vibrating like a heatshield or something..

In my Evo, I thought the turbo was fluttering or something in 5th gear around 55mph.....it turned out to be a shifter cable vibrating, still need to fix it

I have the exact same problem when I get into 5000rpm on 3rd gear.... Car only has 150km on it and today was the first time I brought it up that high on rpm.... It sounds like it is coming from the gear box area :s

Any updates with Ur situation? Did u find out what caused the noise?

tahoward 07-01-2013 11:43 PM

I sent a PM to you as well but as a general forum update I have not noticed the noise recently. I would agree that it seems to emanate from the transmission when revving high in 3rd/4th.

I'll need to keep an ear out for it on my trip to Cali next week. Plenty of pavement to drive it hard :burnrubber:

So far it's running great still. Currently has 3500 miles on it.

I have the same issue. 86x miles today, and it's been there since day one.

I did a search on here, and it seems it may be the left speaker cover? Either way, I've stopped caring. If it blows, it blows. I always thought it sounded like a small ball bearing rattling around a plastic box.

I have the exact same noise. Reminds me of bouncing a ruler on the edge of a table.
The consensus is that it's a speaker cover?

I think I have the same noise. Any tips on quieting it down?

I have the same noise.. but i located it do the shift knob.. sounds like clutch grinding when you floor it past 6k.. try to hold ur shift knob back when flooring it and see if the vibration stops it:burnrubber:

I'm guessing its the reverse
Lockout rattle. Try holding your reverse lockout and see if it happens. I find out it's the metal piece in the shift rod that the screw is driver into. At high rpm it could be knocking on the side of the rod.

If you take off your reverse lockout you will know what I mean

Is it a whining sound?

Not sure if the issue you desc is the same as mine (or other people also).
Would be good if you can record (audio or vid).

My shift knob rattles too. Found out what rattles on the inside. I did a temp fix.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am getting the "table saw" type noise. Did you fix it? Any problems that became of it?

There's a service builtin for the shifter assembly making noise on acceleration if that's around where you are hearing it take it to the dealership if still under warranty

its definitely the shifter.

some people have shift knob rattle
some have reverse lockout rattle
some have a rattle in the bushings where the lever attaches.

problem is, the TSB only covers early FRS's.. i dont think there is a subaru equivalent. even for scion my 2015 is SUPPOSED to be fixed. but it's definitely not.

i'm also a little paranoid taking it to show the techs.. because it only happens under high load and high RPM. last thing i need is a note in my file that says i bag on my car and then i get denied warranty on something major down the road.

super super annoying. ruins half the fun of rowing through the gears.
