Replace stock muffler?

Thoughts on just having a muffler shop cut out the oem muffler and weld in a lighter and louder one?

i think you are better off keeping you stock one in once clean piece and investing in a axle back , or a muffler delete if weight is an issue

No need to cut.. Get an axle back as mentioned above. Look at the greddy SP elite.. A 10 minute install and easily reversible.

The reason I ask is to save money for the same results.

My family owns a mechanic business, so we get deals from the local muffler shop.

Probably be $250 tops vs $600+

It will probably sound better, add more hp and weigh less too.

A muffler delete costs anywhere from 70$ to 500$ :)

StormTrooper 05-27-2013 04:04 PM

a delete if you decide to add headers or dp/overpipe is going to be stupid loud....

Replace the header . Sound and performance .

Bumping this topic from the dead for more opinions on this. To be clear, I'm looking for sound. Performance upgrades aren't really a concern of mine.

I put a used Magnaflow muffler on my Cobalt and it sounded great, the muffler was $50 and the install was $50. A hundred bucks versus 5 or 7 times that amount for a catback.

Would love to do this again, but don't want to throw any piece of junk on a car like an FR-S... but I also don't want to spend $500+ on an axleback exhaust. Apparently the Greddy axleback isn't even that loud or great sounding, from what I've heard.

Can anyone recommend a good 2 in 1 out muffler to throw on there? Every exhaust company makes so many different kinds, there's no telling what's good and what's not, what's loud and what's quiet. I'm not looking to piss off everyone with the loudness, but definitely not looking for a sleeper sound either.

Been looking at this too as, since changing my manifold, the OEM back box has a rattle/vibration at about 2k.

Works have their ABM and there is a post started recently in this forum about it, which seems the best value for money that I've seen. However as I'm the other side of the Atlantic I've enquired and I can get a custom one made cheaper.

I agree with you. OP I purchased my Berk muffler delete for $125. Install was a breeze took only 20min. You should invest in a muffler delete so you can keep your factory mufflers.

Top Speed Auto sells a GReddy SP Elite look-a-like for $360 shipped. I have it on my car and it sounds good. It drones at 1,500 RPM sometimes.
