Aftermarket Head Units

Looking into replacing the stock pioneer radio. Any cheap but decent head units recommended? Looking in the 300-500$ range.

I think I'm set on the Parrot Asteroid Smart.

Here's a good review:

$300-500 should get you a good head unit if you're looking for sound quality. The Pioneer single-DIN DEH-80PRS is great for sound quality but might look a little funny in a double-din slot. I personally love my Pioneer AVH-x8500bhs, but its a bit on the higher end of your range. Its little bro, the AVH-X5500bhs is really good too. If you're looking for native built-in GPS then it would be more difficult to get something good in that price range.

As always, Crutchfield and their knowledgeable staff are your friends. Prices aren't the lowest but customer service is second to none.

Ok thank you. Yea sound quality is a lot what I'm looking for, I'll probably be looking into the AVH-X5500bhs and ask crutchfield what would be good with it.

Depends on what you want out of the head unit. Are you keeping the stock stereo and JUST replacing the head unit?

Do you have a preference on single or double DIN? What other options are you interested in?

I ended up with the Pioneer AVH-x3500BHS. The screen is 6.1" compared to the 7" of the X5500BHS. Also the X5500 has a motorized face with the buttons at the bottom of the unit.

A friend has the 5500 and I like that one too. Both are good choices, but I couldn't justify the extra $100 for 1 inch of screen. I got mine for $297 on amazon.

I've got the AVH-X5500BHS and love it. Sounds great with my OEMAudio+ 400.

First I'm just doing the head unit because I'm low on money lol. But yeah eventually I will be putting in a better system. Leaning a lot towards Alpine products.

Was the OEMAudio+ 400 just plug and play with the AVH-X5500BHS as it is with the stock head units?

Yep, just tell them that you have that head unit when ordering so they can program the DSP properly.

USB is easier than aux, USB you just need one of these (and an available USB port on the back of your head unit) to keep USB http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...AX-TOYUSB.html
