What Kind of Break-in Necessary for HPDE?
Just picked up my BRZ a week ago and currently have ~ 300 miles on it. How critical is it to do the full 1,000 mile break-in before any hard driving / track work?
I ask because I was hoping to attend a track day that will take place next week, but wasn't sure if pushing a relatively new engine was unadvisable at this point. I could see getting up to 500 miles total right before the track day. Should I go for it, or play it safe and just wait until I get to around 1,000 miles before starting to track it? :happy0180: |
Just go for some mad long drives.

Some people swear that the break in is useless and it's "already broken in from the factory"
It's really up to you, no hard evidence either way. Personally I'd be doing lots of drives, if you're going to go through that effort though don't just set the cruise control, you should be varying the rpm. |
I'd think you'd want to do the 1k mi break in, change all the fluids and filters, change to better brake fluid, and swap brake pads. I haven't tracked mine, but from what I hear the stock brake setup will fade quickly and destroy the stock pads on the first day.

Transmission fluid/oil. Brake fluid (replace it with racing fluid that won't boil as easily). Might want to ask in the HPDE subforum-- I haven't done anything special to mine yet.

Counterpoint: Car should be fine off the floor for light track duty, personally don't plan on changing anything until I know what I need to change through experience.

300 mi?
You're good to go--have fun! |

I think I might for it and just try not to red-line it / keep the revs down. Thanks guys!
