D.I.Y. - BRZ courtesy door light bulb change

*will edit and make cleaner after, at work and bored so made this quick*

I figure I'd go into detail for those that want to change the bulbs to LED's.

Going to include before and after pics in dark afterwords.

I ordered 2x "white light bulb LED's smd dc 12v t10 5 LED 5050 car wedge" on ebay.
These are the shorter stubby LED's, had the longed ones but they won't fit in the space for the light.

Things you need:
1. Flathead screwdriver (used the on in the trunk)
2. Your replacement L.E.D.'s

Step 1.
Take out light assembly with flathead.
-Use the right side of the light assembly to take out as the clip is on that side.
-There should be a small crack you can fit the flatjead through.
-I lifted it a bit. Held in place with finger/nail, reposition flathead deeper and got the corner out.
-Used my hands to grab the rest out.
*note on drivers and passenger side you will pry from the right side*

Step 2.
Remove light assembly
-Un-clip the grey/white clip.

Step 3.
Take out the plastic cover on top of the bulb.
-If you look closely there is a big visible clip away from the bulb. (There is a second small one the opposite side by the bulb)
-I used my flathead to go underneath and pressed the clip/tab a bit until it loosed from place.
-I then gentle grabbed the top plastic piece and wiggled it up until it came off.
-The plastic cover should still be attached on the other side.
(I simply put the cover on a slight angle and wiggled it up and away from the bulb)

Step 4.
Taking out the bulb.
-There should be a small space to fit the flathead where he bulb connects.
-I fit it through and gently but with some force and slowly pushed the bulb out.
(For me the bulb still went flying out, hitting me in the face and bouncing on the floor 20 times. Happened both times)
So be careful! Lucky bulb didn't break.

Step 5.
Replacing with LED.
-Plug and play, do whatever trick gets it in.
-DO NOT put plastic cover on yet!!
*note the shape of original bulb makes it appear that the LED can go deeper but you only need it to go as far as it can.

Step 6.
Check LED is working.
-Go back and insert the clip into the assembly. If it is not working take out the LED rotate it 180 degrees/the other way.
(For me both worked first try)

Step 7.
If working put plastic cover on LED and put assembly back in.
-For the plastic cover I put it in reverse of how I took it out. Big clip in first then I clipped the small clip last.
-Put the light assembly back into place the opposite way you took out, wiring end first.

Done!

hold up, didnt know the BRZ had the light. Could you trace the wires supplying power. I want my lights on the FRS to be fuctional.

I wish I knew how (n) sorry very noob.
But I am assuming they may just be connected to the dome lights :S.

I remember one person saying it had the wiring or harness or something already there on the frs.

the Fr-s has amber housings, the BRZ has clear correct? If so , Should I go to subaru parts department and receive the clear housings?

I believe that these are only available on the brz. Maybe in europe or australia or something the frs has it turn on.

I am not too sure about that. Is your light functional on your frs? If, so then the brz clear/white one should fit.

My BRZ is the Premium and it has a red lens but there is NO light at all.. Just a red housing. I don't think there is a bulb. Haven't checked yet. I would love them to work as lights or even better, puddle lights. Lets keep this thread going. Who has moved forward with light placement where there is none? Sounds like the FRS could use it too.

I went and took off the red covers. Buy the way, put the screwdriver on the hinged side of the light to pop off the cover on the left side of the car worked perfect. Sure enough, no light or wires that I could see. Means we will have to get power. Now finding power for when the doors open might be fun to find.

Haha nice write up. I myself did the same awhile back.

one thing I notice when I put the LEDs in my doors is that they are in different positions, on the driver side they are on the top part of the plastic piece the passenger side their on the bottom part.

also you have more slack on the wire on the passenger side since the plastic piece on that side goes in the opposite way the driver side does.

Thanks! This was most helpful.

Waiting for my LEDs to arrive, then I will be swapping out the whole car! Thanks!
