Slow take off
 

Does anyone have this problem? I feel that when I take off from red light, I can never take off fast. Feels like I don't have enough power at low rpm.

Could it be me shifting at early rpm? I shift around 3k because still breaking in. Or I'm just not a good mt driver

Just hold the revs a touch longer to around 4K if you are worried about breaking it in but exceeding these revs occasionally while it is new won't do any harm to your engine. This should help when you shift in to second. Shifting at 3K means you are travelling at less than 15mph and giving the second gear some hard work to do. Your driving will be fine - it is simply a matter of getting used to what the car is like and how it likes to be driven - and it likes plenty of revs :confused0068:. Hope this helps.

relax take your time breaking the engine in dont rush a good engine break in will help engine run last and strong...i let mine rip 6/7K rpm after like 5500k miles but i did change my oil first... :burnrubber: i love getting the car sideways.. im not about going fast on straight aways i drive

You should try driving a Mazda 2 if you want to experience a slow take off, lol. That's what I had before the FR-S and this thing feels like a muscle car in comparison! (and that's keeping it under 4k rpm too)

In my opinion, there's just not much going on below 4500 rpm. Once the tach sweeps past 4500 though, you feel a nice little surge getting out of the torque dip and the engine makes decent power until redline. That's just the nature of small-displacement NA engines.

I red-lined off the lot. So have many others. I'm at about 4300mi and haven't even had a CEL, when even those babying theirs cars did. Stop worrying about that break in nonsense. This is the 21st century. Material technology has advanced. :D

If you are following the manual for the break-in period (I did), then you should also note that it says not to do over 4k RPM or any fast acceleration while under 1k miles. So you shouldn't be trying to "take off fast".
That being said, whether or not to follow the suggested break-in is up to you.

This is pretty much why people say the FRS/BRZ is slow. What car did you come from before? NA 4 cylinders have less torque than v6s especially at low RPMs. As others said just shift a little later if you want to feel faster. In my g35 I probably shifted a little over 2000rpm from 1st to second, on the FRS probably around 3-3.5k.

You're kind of right from what I understand. From what I've been told though is that the car will shut down and go into dummy mode if you do high RPMs during the break in period. From my motorcycle days I remember the debate on doing a "hard" engine break in and how it helps with compression. If the FRS will let you rip on the throttle early on then I'd do it for the whole break in period.

I like your dress code. While i did not red line my AT off the lot, i did it many times during break-in period. Runs like a ninja. only issues are taillight condensation and crickets so far.:burnrubber:


To answer to op question, yes mine is normally slow pickup. But you try launching the car.

This has been discussed to DEAD ! The Torque on the FRS is not too impressive. Only 125 or so at 3500. So if you want to take off, take off like people said. Around 4k rpm

I was stuck driving a Mazda 2 for 3 days as a rental car. By the end of the first 5 minutes I wanted to kill whoever designed that car by dropping one on their head and then lighting it on fire. That thing was honest to god the worst vehicle I have ever driven in my entire life. And I've driven a Geo Metro before.

When i auto cross, i launch at 4-4.5k rpm. the torque dip is killer. I would launch higher if I had a better clutch.

There's your problem. Can't shift early and be fast at the same time with this car stock.
