I like smallerish wheels especially for drifting

I am leaning towards just going with a 17x9 wheel and using the stock tires. I left the Japanese car scene for about 6 years or so. As I am getting back into it with my FRS I have started looking around after different wheel options and since I am a huge drifting fan, hence my handle, having smaller diameter wheels with thinner tires should make it a much easier car to drift until I boost it.
Anyone else into drifting follow my train of thought on this?
With my sr swapped s14 240 I was only running 15 inch rims with about 230 hp give or take with the red top and what minor mods I had.
Seemed to work fine then so wondering why everyone goes to 18 inch rims nowadays. Maybe I am a little more old school.

Doesn't take much to drift this car, the difference to 17 to 18 inch wheels won't make that much of a difference.

A lot of people are more into tracking this car then just drifting it, i'm a mix of both. Though i'm parital to 18 inch because the wheel i want is only in that size, i don't mind.

Though i'd love to see more people running 15's!

Also i wouldn't recommend the stock tire of drifting, assuming your going to buy more sets of them. They are quite expensive, its a MPG tire. Theres better non grippy tires that you can get for cheap.

No once these wear out then I will buy new ones. Then I may looking into jumping to an 18 for dd then 17's for drifting. I was looking at the rocket bunny running those ultra wide 16's and it just looks sick to me.

how will a smaller diameter make it easier to drift?

I can't say it makes it easier other than from a weight savings standpoint. Typically though when going up in diameter most people go with a wider tire which adds more contact patch which theoretically would make it more difficult to get the tires to break loose.
I am just looking at all options at this point. On some frs with 17 inch rims they look too small vs. some it looks perfect.

I like to run the smallest wheels that will clear the brakes. For me that's 17 with the stop techs. I love a meaty 17 any day.

well less weight makes everything better but you arent confined to what people typically do so just buy what you want. most decent drifters ive encountered like more grip, not less. my advice would be not to waste time on rims if you are going to run the same tires instead of buying wider rims despite not wanting wider.
