Torque on a Stock BRZ Head Unit
I am just looking around, and have been reading some of the threads on adding a backup camera. Would it be possible to add mirroring of an a phone and thus the Torque app in the same way?
Basically the cameras that are used have an RCA plug that leads into the head unit. Couldn't a splitter like this: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Gold-Plated-Splitter-Adaptor/dp/B004C8I88W/ref=pd_bxgy_e_text_y"]Amazon.com: Monoprice Gold Plated RCA Plug to 2 RCA Jack Splitter Adaptor: Electronics[/ame] be used along with this usb powered HDMI converter: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Universal-Composite-Converter-Standard/dp/B0080KN18K/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1368928605&sr=8-3&keywords=hdmi+to+component"]Amazon.com: ViewHD Universal HDMI to Composite / AV Video Converter, Support PAL / NTSC Standard TVs: Electronics[/ame] to allow phones / devices with an HDMI out to display on the stock head unit and still have a backup camera? I know it isn't as smooth or sleek as a brand new full android head unit, but I'm not after a better radio. I just want to be able to put all the gauges that Torque has on the screen where I can glance at them? Any thoughts? |
Not sure where you'd put that splitter. BRZ headunit doesn't have RCAs.

It does via the backup camera input, just need the harness from svxdc or make your own. You would have to install a switch to fool the car into thinking you are in reverse so the screen comes on.
The resolution is fairly low though I don't know how good it would look. Also probably won't look too good with the parking lines. :) Might be better to just get a used Android phone to run it on. |
I was referring to the adapter plug you get from svxdc or beatsonic. I completely forgot about the parking lines. I figured you'd have a switch to have the input be seen by the head unit though.

I would just replace the HU with one that can run Torque natively. Even if you get the video feed into the stock unit, composite is a very crappy signal. It would look fuzzy.

Yeah, it may not be a very good idea. Was just playing around with the thought. I don't even really listen to music much... I'm more of a talk radio guy.
I do like the torque app though, and I don't want to pay a few hundred bucks for it if I might be able to make it work on the stock head unit. I figure for 30 bucks it might be worth a shot. If anyone has any ideas or other suggestions I'm open to them. I'm going to put in the backup camera and I'll try it while I have the head unit out anyhow. |
