Cammed FR-S/BRZ?

Hey guys, I'm just posting this out of curiosity... Has anyone thought of camming their car? I'm not educated on this topic or anything but I know guys with WRX's and STI's doing it and it makes the car sound ridiculously good.

Again, this is simply out of curiosity and would like some opinions from people who know more about this. What would be the benefits and/or downfalls to doing this?

Here's a few videos that grabbed my interest on this topic:

Thanks.

EDIT: I meant to post this in the general forum (probably would have been more appropriate)

No cams have been released yet. But there in the works.

Still waiting on Tomei and a few others to release some cams...I hope they come soon

The gains would have to be huge for me to have my car sound like that. If i wanted a loopy idle I would have spent $500 on a 5.0.

This is the shit! Anyone know what cams Accelerated is using here?:eyebulge:

Downside? Kiss your fuel mileage and low end torque goodbye :)

Why's it sound like that at idle?

In simple terms, with a larger cam prophile, the valves are held open longer to allow more air and fuel in, and exhaust out. During low engine speeds such as idle, there is a point in the combustion cycle that both intake and exhaust valves are held open at the same time, causing the "lumpy" idle. Here is a good read on cams if your bored.

How would that affect mpg?

Its hard to say. It will depend on what type of set up your running. But anyone who goes out of there way to run a built engine with agressive cams, probably isn't too concerned with gas milage.

The FA20 has a good VTC setup. 1 for each cam. We will be able to have pretty aggressive cams for high end and still retain good idle and low end driving.

What low end torque anyways?

SkullWorks 05-20-2013 06:52 PM

cam design on this motor is gonna be tricky,

There is alot to be gained with a good set of maps for the VTC already on the engine.

Adding more lift and or duration will limit the available window for DI aswell as potentially limiting the max adv/retard of the cams to keep from kissing the valves.

I also feel that with the flow the motor already supports cams may not be as necessary as in some other engines

Sounds amazing after you stomp on it:burnrubber: but not so much at idle

Unlike some of the others, I think cams sound awesome at idle. I've always loved that distinctive cam idle sound. Will be interesting to see when cams are released from various companies (inevitable) what they add from a torque/HP perspective.
