Passenger seat belt warning when I put phone on seat!???

Does this happen to anyone else? Ill put down my iphone on the passenger seat and within minutes the seat belt warning will go off as though someone is sitting there. I was under the impression tehse sensors requires a certain amount of weight to go off (50lbs)?

Could it be my sensor is defective?

raptor87 05-12-2013 04:28 PM

It does not use a weight sensor its capacitance based your phone is setting it off because of the battery in it probably

My phone does this too in my BRZ premium. I wondered if it was because it's a wirelessly rechargeable phone?

I have found that the alarm goes off only when my phone is plugged into the USB port. When it's not plugged it does not go off. I have an iPhone 5.

anything that has an electrical current will set it off.....phone, laptop, even a half gallon of jack and 2 liter of coke will set it off

Mine doesn't do this. I put my laptop (sleep mode) on the seat, my iPhone (either plugged in or not, and my blackberry. No issues. When someone sits there, it displays the airbag on status - so mine is working like it should, but from what I read, it shouldn't work this well. No complaints here!

guess only way is to continue tying the passenger seat belt even when no one is there...prolly easier to buy a buckle part on ebay so that i dont have to strap the whole thing

It's the power cord that is not the phone that sets the alarm

This happen to me when I put my laptop or phone ... Even my iPod :(. But once u take it off the seat it's fine ... I just throw my laptop in the back seats cuz that's what they were ment for ... For junk lol. Not ppl :).

Isn't there a section in the manual that specifically talks about this?

"Also, if luggage or electronic devices are placed on the front passenger’s
seat, this may adversely affect the ability of the system to determine deployment.
This may prevent the front passenger’s frontal airbag ON and OFF
indicators from working properly. Check that the indicators work properly.
When the OFF indicator turns off and the ON indicator illuminates, the front
passenger’s frontal airbag may deploy during a collision. Remove luggage
and electronic devices from the front passenger’s seat."

Sometimes I take fresh fruit for lunch and that even sets it of.

Good thing the EU model doesn't seem to have that sensor. There's basically always stuff lying on mine

sklimo 09-12-2013 03:36 PM

Mine doesn't do this and I have my phone plugged in and on the seat all the time. I have a Galaxy S4 though.

supramkivtt2jz 09-12-2013 03:40 PM

Mine will go off when the phone is in the most recessed part of the bottom cushion - it will not do it anywhere else. It does not matter if the phone is charging or not.

I used to freak out about it because i assumed it was a faulty pressure switch. turns out i can put about 20 lbs on the seat before it indicates a seat belt warning.

Either the dealer can disable the passenger side seatbelt warning in the ECU or you can do it yourself.

I have always had my phone plugged in and on the seat, as well as a lunch box, and have never ever received a warning.

It may have something to do with what kind of case you have on your phone. A phone without a case would probably be more prone to electrostatic charge than something in a plastic or rubber case.

Pete156 09-13-2013 12:24 PM

I have had my iPad, iPhone and laptop on the passenger seat. Only thing that sets off the alarm is a person sitting in the seat. No issues here.

Seraph 09-13-2013 12:29 PM

Interesting.... yeah this has happened to me once....but only once so I thought it was a fluke.
