Headlight Swap Question
Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this subject matter.
Question for headlight swap experts. Besides the obvious DOT compliance issue and the difficulties in acquiring the JDM 86 LED/HID headlamp units, What other issues will be faced when swapping the headlamp units? For instance: 1. Wiring a. Do you believe that the proper bulb/watt connections will exist in the Scion that will allow for plug and play installations? b. Any additional wiring concerns for the LED? 2. Auto leveling: If the units are auto leveling will it require modification? Thank you |
You know once, I didn't know what a word meant. So, I searched in the dictionary.
If it wasn't in that dictionary, I waited till the car.. I mean, word came out in the new dictionary. We don't know, the car isn't even out yet, but they are supposed to be the same size. |
Get a BRZ. Comes with LED & HID. Problem solved.

We don't know anything about sizing/wiring. We've never even seen the car in the flesh, let alone been able to observe intricate things like this. |
I do not intend to be rude but my question was really only geared towards those who have experience swapping headlights and if have they faced those issues mentioned above given any headlight swap that has both LED and HID technology. I have seen many non OEM headlight swaps that include LED technology and typically the LED units don't seem to light up as bright or the HID unit does not level at all.

Like I mentioned before, most of us haven't seen the car in person, let alone, seen it mechanically (not sure if word) BTW hello fellow Miami-an :D |
I'm not sure about other cars and what the GT86/FRS differences are.
But I have an Infiniti G20 known as a Nissan Primera else where. When I swapped the stock headlights to the JDM HIDs I had to make a wire harness for it. The stock ones are H4, while the JDM ones are HID D2R that has a ballast. Another thing that was different were the corner harness, but that was an easy fix since you can swap the adapter clip from the USDM ones. One more thing was the JDM ones had a leveler with a controller in the car. I didn't use this because it was hard to source one, but may be getting one soon. I also had a EK Civic before and know those are a straight swap, however, the JDM ones don't have the piece that covers the H4 bulb. So the light will blind people from the opposite direction. I hope this gives you an idea. |
