"Just a Drive" in North Georgia

1 Attachment(s)
Hey everyone. I was thinking about taking my own little driving trip for a day, but I figured that it would be much more fun if others came along. With that said, this wouldn't be a sponsored event. There would be no entry fees or anything like that.

This isn't going to be one of those "let's wait a whole month" to see how many people we can get. I say we need to go within the next week or two.

I was thinking somewhere around here (see map). I personally have never been there.

All fun roads. A few things to keep in mind. I have driven these roads before as I live fairly close by.

Hwy 129 through there can be heavily patrolled as can Suches. Going northbound on 60 has deep ditches all along the road till you get to the top. You have to be careful not to dip a tire off as it is white line then ditch. There is no pavement beyond the white line. Going southbound on 60 has cliff with minimal guardrails. Wolf Pen Gap Road is quite narrow in places and has quite a few driveways to parks and people's homes.

Don't take this as me saying not to go. Do go, but please be mindful and don't go at excessive speed. I don't want to hear about totaled Twin's or multiple tickets.

BTW, I feel old after posting that. I am only 34 damn it!

Thanks for the pointers. Are you familiar with the route 129 portion of that loop? I went over it on maps and earth street view. It goes back and forth between having two lanes on one side and a single on the other.

I'm in Buford, but I haven't been near that area yet.

Yes, I have been over that route several times. Going up the mountain to the top is a 3 lane. There are 2 lanes going up and one going down. It flips at the top of the mountain. If you are going northbound to the top you have 2 lanes but once you crest the top you have 1 lane on the decent.

Sweet then stay tuned. If we can get at least five people, then that would be fine for me.

I would prefer to not go any further then what you see on the map above. NC is a little over half an hour away from that point too. :bellyroll:
As for when, like I said, something in the near future and not months away like everything else. If we can get five people, then we can decide.

Sounds good to me but I can't exactly see where that location is lol maybe a more zoomed out pic, or just where exactly it is? As in, what cities/counties it crosses

Ok, that area is up about 30 mins north of the END of Hwy 400. No joke. You drive through Dahlonega, Ga to get up there.

I was up there today. It was traffic hell on a cool cloudy dreary day. It won't be any better if the weather is nice.

Wolf pen Gap is just as narrow as I remembered. So it Hwy 60. Both are rough, too. US129 was the same as always. It is fairly smooth and with the 3 lane sections you have plenty of areas to pass slower traffic. Everything I mentioned earlier still applies.

The climb up US 129 from Hwy 9/19 shown on the map made me want more grunt. Not really HP but torque. I ended up running 2nd gear and turning 5K-7K most of the way up or the car felt like it was bogging and just not going anywhere.

When I got away from traffic, it was fun though. The BRZ/FR-S has way more grip than people realize. I think my driving style actually counter acts the oversteer nature of the car and it just is perfect balance through the corner. Same speed or higher than with the '11 STI I had. :eyebulge: VSC Sport was worthless. I had to turn everything off to keep it from interfering. I expected that to be honest.

Go and have fun guys. Just be cautious and expect lots of slow traffic that can't maintain their lane at any speed.

good insight
