Wheel size and fitment
I hope that there are others like me who will find this thread useful. If you have any information regarding the diameter, widths and offsets that are compatible with the 86, post them here.
The larger wheel manufacturers out there determine their compatible wheel sizes based on CAD data released by Toyota. I wouldn't be surprised if those sizes are a bit conservative and what I'd really like to know is how wide of a wheel you can fit with what offset. Here's what I've heard so far from my contact at Enkei. Quote:

If one of the many people who has access to these things would simply measure the distances between the stock tyre, strut body and guard (fender), the guessing could all end.

PF01 is my first choice for sure. I'll look at others only if they don't have a good set to match the 86.

Will!! I just caught your post here. It's Anthony Magagnoli... I drove the silver E30 in the One Lap in '10 and the winning car at the 25hr/25min/25sec ChumpCar race at Nelson, where I saw you in October.
Just wanted to say hey. I just sent you a fb friend request. ttyl |
I just want to be able to run 225/45 17 on the FR-S without rubbing or clearance issues.
I know that the engineers at Toyota and Subaru know what they're doing, but in RWD vehicles, I want a decent contact patch and more grip than needed. It's not like I'm looking to take this car drifting, so I don't need the tail to step out on me to enjoy this car. |
Not that I discredit your contact at Enkei, but I find the recommended wheel size somewhat incredulous, especially the offsets. It's been confirmed that the stock FR-S wheel is 17x7, +48 - typical of subaru's sizing. Do you think that it's safe to go down 8 to 13 mm in offsets considering the well-known vulnerability of subaru's wheel bearings especially if you are gonna do some sort of motorsport activities? (I'm curious to know, too) Of course, such a concern is not going to apply to hellaflush ppl though.

Yeah, hopefully the lighter weight will alleviate the problem.
IMO, "Motorsports" = "Big fat sticky tires"- Hence, I'm concerned... |
My point is that fat sticky tires with +48 wheels aren't much kinder to the wheel bearings than fat sticky tires with +35 wheels.

Some of the Subaru owners here noted that the newer bearings were vastly improved anyways. I have no idea if that's true or not.

ET30 is MAD .. unless you run super skinny tires..
I have a set of ET37 BBS ... and at current height I RUB like crazy( current car)) Now I have a set of Enkei RPF01 which is Offset 48.... You can do it for looks but drive SLOW so you wont rub and people can see your ride. or Not go for looks. I am currently looking at the Enkei Spec chart... and I am curious if for 5x100 16s will fit because it'll have ET35 ... 5x100 16Inch Enkei RPF-01 ET35 7Inch Wide... on 205/55-16 I am currently pretty much done with big wheels .... skinny tires and dropping my car((which is on Coils)) On the BRZ I intend to run 16s intead of 17s |
hypothetically, if you were to chose a 17x8 inch rim with +35 offset, how would that compare to a 17x7 +45 or whatever? would that fill in lateral wheel gap? how would the rims stance be?
