E15
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013...d-damage-cars/
This seems like a CYA from Subaru for warranty purposes, but page 422 of the BRZ owner's manual says: "Use only gasoline containing a maximum of 10% ethanol. DO NOT use any flex-fuel or gasoline that could contain more than 10% ethanol, including from any pump labeled E15, E30, E50, E85 (which are only some examples of fuel containing more than 10% ethanol)." That being said, I have read that many people here are running E85 without any reported problems. I haven't seen any E15 in my area yet, but I am wondering if it would be worth it to invest in a flex fuel kit for a car that is a dd? http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...580#post917580 |
People are running E85 because they've been retuned to run E85. If you through E85 in your car right now it could damage your engine because it would run lean (E85 needs more fuel per air volume) as well as other issues.
FlexFuel (if done correctly) on the other hand would be a great way to have the E85 performance but not be limited to planning your entire driving habits around E85 locations. |
Is it worth it to save a few dimes per gallon at the expensive of only getting low 20's in MPG over low 30's on pump gas?

$3.00/ Gallon x 10 =/= 220 miles per tank. = .136 cents a mile $3.80/gallon x 10 =/= 300 miles per tank. = .126 cents a mile but you also get ~15whp increase from e85 |

If you can get E85 local, it's really a matter of whether the price is good enough for you or not. It does violate the warranty but it's much cheaper and IMHO safer than a turbo kit. Granted we don't know what effect it will have yet. I suspect it will wear stuff out faster but I dunno how much. I would upgrade stuff as it failed. If that means replacing a fuel pump every 10 years or even a fuel rail, that's not so bad. |
