get 16“ rims for winter?

Is it a good idea to get a 4 16" rims and tires in the winter just cuz it is cheaper than 17"? I wondering the ground clearance will be less and get easily stuck in the snow...

If you choose a higher-profile snow, such as a 205/55/16, the diameter will be just about the same.

This.
That is the size I ran last winter. We had more snow than we've had in a long time, and the car worked great. I used Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60s. I was pushing snow with the lower part of the front bumper a couple of times on my way into work, but the nannies combined with a great set of winter tires kept me moving forwards and under control. Generally speaking, for snow use, you'll want a skinnier tire with more sidewall (hence the 16" rim size) for the best bite. You will give up some dry handling, but the trade-off is worth it.

where did u get the wheels? used?

This is what I'm doing, 205/55/16's on black steel wheels from Tire Rack.
There's some tire diameter comparison sites that let you punch in different tire specs to find the closest tire diameter when using a different rim size. If you get it really close (close to or better than 1% +/-) there's virtually no difference in ride height or diameter.

What other cars use the same bolt pattern? Any old Celica, Capri or Taco?
Need enough room for the calipers though.
Be good to know when cruizing Craigslist.

I'm pretty certain most Subaru 5x100 wheels will fit same as stock, but it's worth some quick research to verify... I believe most have the same offset, etc.

I used new black steel wheels on mine. They were about $50/ea and were the same wheels used for an Impreza. Some people were able to find them at Costco for even less than that. If you don't like the look of plain steel wheels, you should be able to find a set of OEM Impreza aluminum wheels used for a pretty decent price.
