If you can hear it then it's outside the range of the knock sensors because they will detect it and adjust before you can hear it.

I'm surprised that 95RON made it pre-ignite because the book does say it can be used if 85 is unavailable but 98+ is what it's tuned for. 98 RON only on the filler cap, so I don't know how they can sell it in US states with only 91AKI available?

Be careful using octane booster. I think it can damage the catalytic converters?

Yeah detonation melts pistons only if its detonating for a extended period of time, say for a hr or so. I am also equally surprised it detonates at only 95RON. But the general consensus is if you fill up with 95RON, dont redline it at every stop light haha!

detonation can also hammer rod bearings

Detonation also damages your cylinder head, damages your pistons, mix your fuel system with your engine oil etc etc etc

Thankfully i didnt redline when i heard it pinging for less than 5 mins, until i pulled over into a BP station and filled her up with some good lovely BP ultimate

In modern cars we have octane & knock sensors that can retard the timing in order to compensate for lower octane fuels. You'll lose a little performance but nothing to worry about. Just pump the correct octane next time you pump gas.

You know most dealers do not fill up the tank with premium. For normal driving, I use 87 octane and haven't heard any pinging or any problems with my car. On auto x days or when gas prices are down, I do use 92 octane from Wawa. I never let my tank go lower than 1/4 and I usually switch on and off on 92 octane to 87.

Woah! I always use 98RON/93AKI no matter what! It gives better mileage and better performance. I always fill up at 1/4 tank to 3/4 tank or full tank. But please always fill up with premium, never settle for anything worse :)

That's I am averaging 34-37 MPG on the highway and with city driving mixed in, I have an average fuel economy of 29-32mpg :/

If you're absolutely determined to use 87 in this car, don't keep switching between 87 and 92. Let the ECU adjust to 87 and leave it at that.

If you keep switching, you'll get detonation when the ECU is adjusting down from 92 to 87.

Most, if not all gas stations in the northeast only have E10 gas for 87-93.

On a car that is designed to run on premium, and that specifies its exclusive use, using low-octane is foolish. You are forcing the engine to de-tune itself and run less efficiently. In addition, not all "pinging", as opposed to "detonation" is audible, so you are likely causing damage to your engine before it can respond to the problem.

I agree. buts it weird that i pinged on 95RON/91. Maybe it was because i redlined every single traffic light. Has anyone else had issues with 91 in their car, and redllining it frequently?

First of all put octance boost in your car if you havent already. then slap your dad. finally it should not have hurt the car at all. you can always change the fuel in a car if need be. but the A/f ratio was designed to run on 91+ The worst it will do is give you poor gas mileage and it might foul up the spark plugs. you will lose a little power. I would suggest not doing it again.

91 can be used when it's not available, without detriment but it's going to lose power and can't be good long term because it's designed to run on 93 octane or higher.

87 would void the warranty and almost certainly cause engine damage.

I guess I'm screwed, since in the south we only have 91. However, 91 is perfectly fine for the car. Will not cause issues, will not cause less power. It's still a very high octane fuel.

87 is not gonna void the warranty, and honestly doubt would cause any damage. Remember, cars are a lot smarter than you think.
