DIY: GoPro tow hook mount

2 Attachment(s)
Pretty cheap and simple GoPro tow hook mount. You need three things:
  1. Tow hook (check your trunk)
  2. GoPro handlebar mount: http://gopro.com/camera-mounts/handlebar-seatpost-mount
  3. Large nut on the tow hook to keep it from going in all the way. I used a 3/4", which is just big enough to slip past the threads, but not slip all the way down the tow hook.
What you get:

Also, if anyone is curious, I have this mic http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/wi...eca17168eef6f/ routed up through the tow hook opening and into the engine bay by the battery. Worked like a charm!

NICE, so a 3/4" nut works huh?
Cool I'll give that a try

3/4" is a bit bigger than the tow hook's thread, but it did the job.

Thanks, man! :happy0180:
Mosport DDT is a fun little twisty track that our cars were built for. I learned that day what lighter/wider/stickier wheels & tires can do for this car from another FR-S in my group. Once he got those things warmed up (it was hovering around freezing all day) all I could do was get the hell out of his way!

Do you have any closer pictures? I'll probably go this route.

Updated OP with pic of whole setup and revised nut size choice explanation.

This is a great idea!

The footage turned out great and for $20 its the most economical solution I've seen so far.

Thanks for the details on how to make it work!

Thanks for the update. I just ordered one on amazon for $19. I'll probably play around with it by this weekend.

Btw, does the Gopro need a battery powered mic? I have a clip on mic that doesn't use batteries. It's meant for computers.

Don't quote me on this, but I don't believe a GoPro requires a battery powered mic. I went with this one because I found a whole mess of videos online with this mic, plus it has a 20' cable which means it can be mounted anywhere. Batteries are cheap too.

As soon as I purchase a new exhaust I will be trying the mic mounted right by it.

Battery powered mic is highly recommended from what I've searched (but not matter what the stock built in microphone is horrible!). A lot of people seem to like the Audio Technica PRO 24CM (~$60-$70):

I remember seeing that C6 videos when I was searching for a mic. It definitely sounds good. My wallet dictated which mic I should buy. He's bossy.

Also should mention for anyone shopping around to make sure you get a mic with a stereo connector. If you use a mono connector you will only get sound in one channel.

I did this as well. The problem with the BRZ is that the tow hook sits too far in, even with the nut. The camera either has to be pointed slightly up or will be slightly crooked (its crooked in this picture). It shouldn't be an issue if I just use one of the little extensions.
