I dislike fake. That's the first thing I did and I'm glad. In the serveral survey's Scion has asked me to complete that's one area I knocked down. I suggested they could probably have put in a nice console cover/arm rest for what the growl tube costs.

I KNOW !!!!!! I WANT A FUCKING OEM ARMREST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I literally have to bring my dog along so he can sit in the back and I can use his big ass block head as an arm rest!!!!!!!

wait, what? those growly engine sounds I hear are fake? please elaborate. I searched "sound tube" in the search box and just got a bunch of random threads from the regional forums about deleting things

I'm on my phone so it's a bit harder to post pics. But essentially our intake (which functions very well for a stock box might I add) has two tubes connected to it. 1 pushes air into the engine. The other small skinny tube that goes under the engine is a sound tube which funnels air into a little box that generates sound into another tube which goes into our cabin. It doesn't affect performance at all but it sounds cool. That is a small portion of the sound you are hearing tho because our engine makes its own growls noise. Someone feel free to correct me hear but I think it's a fairly accurate explanation.

I plugged it from the inside, but when I upgraded to after market intake, we removed the sound tube and plugged the hole under the hood, too. MUCH quieter in the cabin. I can actually converse normally AND hear my OEMaudio+ even better. :D

It's on the left of the intake that runs up the center in this picture:

And here is a plug someone did to remove it:

Basically a stethoscope so you can hear the pretty intake noise, which is where the noise comes from that Italians have been using to give pedestrians orgasms for decades.

Edit: I haven't removed mine yet because I'm a bit worried that it contains volume that the intake relies on so it is tuned properly which would result in a loss of efficiency if I simply pulled it off. It would undoubtedly be unnoticeable from the butt dyno but I've also been lazy. I think plugging it is the best solution at the moment for me.

I'm going to buy the perrin inlet tube which deletes it and provides better airflow. I've also been told it levels out the idle dip. No proof of that until I buy it tho.

Mine is not plug.. Actually I like it for now till I get my exhaust/ intake.. I don't like loud exhaust and looking for something that growls when I open it up at high RPMs..
Plus I have music on and don't really notice the sound

I don't know if I'm supposed to post external forum links, but at the bottom of the following page there's another useful illustration from the fr-s service manual:
