Toyota own branded oil (5w-30,API-SM,full syn) but why do i feel power is decreasing?

my name is Dharpo and i own a Toyota 86 (Scion FR-S)

i have done my first service at 1000 km and change my oil + oil filter at 3500 km.. its just that seeing this is Toyota means that i have to use their own oil at dealership to make sure the warranty is OK..

their oil named TGO (Toyota Genuine Oil) Ultimax, 5W-30, Full Synthetic, API-SM (cost 11 USD/litre).. but why do i feel that power is losing.. especially at WOT and higher RPM...

does this means the oil is no good ??

I believe it's good oil from factory but oil used in tranny and diff should be def. Gonna go withmotul in the tranny and diff and then once I finish up my free oil changes I'll be going with motul in the engine as well. Getting all maintenance done by goodspeed once finished at the dealership

Hi Dharpo.

Any chance that this oil meets ACEA A3 specs? If it does, it's likely a very thick 30 weight with a higher High Temp High Shear. Even then, I'm not sure that you could really feel that much of a difference. The factory fill is 0W-20.

Also, are you sure they used that oil and not something even thicker?

yes i am sure they used that because i was there when they do the entire work from emptying to filling up and check it...

i want the 0W-20 but there isn't :( and they even say that 0W-20 is incompatible since it is tropical here... is that even true ?

You would probably have to ask the dealer about the oil specs.

Oil requirements around the world are different based on the oil change interval, climate, driving conditions, etc.

The N. America manual says that 0W-20 can be used in all conditions, whether in Saskatchewan Canada (-15C to -25C in the winter) or the desert of the South West U.S. in summer (46C). It does say that thicker oils can be used in severe conditions, although it doesn't define those viscosities.

European ACEA A3 5W-30 oils are nearly a 40 weight when hot. On the other hand, thin Resource Conserving 5W-30's will sometimes shear to a 20 weight after hard use, fuel dilution, etc.

Any local GT-86 owner's near you to compare? Or you can just call the dealer. Aren't you able to get Motul? The Aussies get a new Motul 0W-20 from the dealer. 0W-20 is about as common as unicorns in Australia as well. And of course, there's also the Asia forum.

Otherwise, buy me a plane ticket and I'll head out there. :D

edit: Looks like the Toyota oil meets GF4 specs (and not Euro ACEA A3) so it won't be that much thicker than a 20 weight oil at operating temperature (especially after some use).

yeah it is GF4, and i seldom met another people because i live in out town.. as far as i know, many owners use other oil, such as Liquimoly (5w-30), HKS oil, and several others... well.. this typical owner in Indonesia isnt snot about maintaining in authorized dealer.. unlike me.. i'm just too conservative.. since ZN6 cost quite a lot here..

i think i will get a 0w-20 for the next oil change...

I had the same thing happen. Switched to 5w30 and the car felt like crap. Went back to 0w20 and had all the power restored.
