Should I buy a wrangler?

I am thinking of getting rid of my civic and picking up a wrangler with the extra cash. It would be my second car next to my brz.

I know they are crappy. I just want something to take the top off and cruise around in. Also I need a decent winter vehicle...

Thoughts?

The one I am looking at in particular is a 95 yj with the 4.0 a 5 speed and 110,000 miles. "claimed" to be 98% rust free....

Is gas/petrol a problem to you?

I think the two make a neat combination. The Wrangler can be used for any dirty task you might have and that just makes keeping the BRZ looking good a lot easier.

Nah, the reason I got my civic was to commute but I find that the brz gets similar mileage (with slightly more expensive fuel). I can live with the gas guzzling around town. I think...

That's exactly how I was thinking about it. To totally opposite cars one I don't care about getting dirty.

Plus the fact they're both fun vehicles.

I have one and they are really bad for rust issues. As long as you can find one with a soild body. Also the old suburban is a good choice.

Finding a 90s bronco around here without rot for under 8 grand is basically impossible. I do love the way they look. I think that some even came with standard transmissions! Would be a pretty sweet car.

Yeah I am going to bring a hammer and a magnet with me. We will see how solid this body actually is. Seeing as you have one, know of anything else that needs to be checked? I am printing out a list from a jeep forum so I can be sure to check everything.

If you've never owned a Wrangler, then I say go for it. It's one of those vehicles that everyone should own at least once in their lifetime. I used to have a CJ-5, but the thing drank gas like it was going out of style. That was really my only beef with it.

A wrangler is one of those vehicles I'm eyeing as a winter beater too. I almost bought a decent Bronco for around 5g's last year, but I'm glad I asked around as others advised me to check the stress areas of the underbody of the Bronco. Apparently some crack over time so I held off from buying one for now.

The old inline 6 was pretty notorious for bad head gaskets I have changed a few. It's not that hard but it does take an afternoon. So keep an eye on that tail pipe when you start it. If more than just a little condensation comes out it may need a head gasket very soon.

They are NOT crappy.

Materials and interior build quality are cheapo but the drivetrain is amazing.

I had a wrangler for 6 years and traded it for the FRS. I then picked up a 98 Cherokee (pretty much the same drivetrain) as a beater.

Amazing in the snow, fun with the top down, you won't regret it.

I've never had engine/tranny issues on my Jeeps. Both are very good.

If you're looking at used get a 97-06, that's the TJ body with coils at all four corners and the last vehicle they used the amazing 4.0L inline 6 in.

LOL I missed reading that. If you can locate a 97+ TJ I'd do it. They've got a better suspension setup.

Check the underside for rust, make sure all the electronics are in order (if the owner didn't do any serious mods they should be)....that's it.

Clutch should be fine at 110k. They're good for 250k plus on these things if not beat up hard.
