Which model do you think will sell more? AT or MT?
Just like I said for the title of the thread. Which model do you think will sell more? The AT or the MT?
|
initially, MT, to people who know what the car is, as time goes on AT because it'll gain popularity among general public (its such a cute car!!)

I wouldn't call it cute. It is handsome to me since it doesn't look feminine or childish. |
Sadly, it will be called cute. All it takes is being small and not ugly.
|
sadyl this car will be purchased by a bunch of girls just like the Celica,
but I'm sure that the real enthusiast will purchase manual. I love how you can't have the WRX in AT. |

The AT will sell more, I think. I'm curious about the proportions though. |
I could care less, because I will always buy a manual tranny, unless they ever come out with a dual clutch tranny that is substantially faster than the manual tranny like Porsche does with their PDK tranny.

As is typical, enthusiast early adopters it will be disproportionately MT biased. As said, as time progresses it will be majority AT as the masses become aware and cross shop it. Luckily for all of us, the only car we have to worry about is our own.

the First 86 registry would indicate quite the opposite. It's at 80% manual, 20% auto. Of course they are a select portion of the demographic, but they have also been selected based on what allocation was coming over on the boat, so I would guess mostly manual. |
AT will be seen more, even some of us hardcore manual people will get a AT, i am for practicality , but either way there will always be a manual in my garage..
|
The automatic without a doubt. Every car in the world sells more numbers in automatic and I don't see why this would be any different. The TC is already a bonafide girls car, just like the mustang v6 is. This car will be no different. Expect to see a million of these in your local college town sporting some stupid pink butterfly sticker on the rear window.
|
I say 60% AT to 40% MT myself. Seeing as a vast majority of Porsche's sold are AT's and that goes for BMW and MB. So I don't see why it would be any different for the FRS/BRZ. I mean Toyobaru does need to turn a profit on this car and let's face it our numbers aren't hardly enough to keep this car on the sales floors by ourselves. We know this and, I'm sure, the guys at Toyobaru know this too.

AT, sadly....
|
im getting mt but no doubt people are lazy
|
I remember reading an article about the manual transmission being a lot lower percentage. Most folks prefer the "conveniences" like paddle shifting, push start, electronic traction control, steering wheel-BT and radio controls and all the other :bs:.
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7...-not-dead-yet/ In the vast population of all light vehicles on U.S. roads--some 240 million in rough numbers--stick shifts account for just 12 percent today, according to Polk, the industry data-gathering firm. Automakers estimate that most are older vehicles, slowly aging out of commission, and that manuals represent a measly 5 to 7 percent of vehicle sales today. ... "Demand for manual transmissions is shrinking for all manufacturers," says Steve Yaeger, Nissan North America Inc.'s spokesman on technology. Nissan offers manual options on many models, including the high-revving 370Z roadster |
Year 1-2, 80%MT, 20%AT. Slowly ATs will take over. By year 5, it'll be 90%AT, 10%MT.
|
AT which IMO is a good thing because they'll be less manuals on the road and hopefully in the future these cars will command a premium like the ae86/240sx/etc.
Properly driving a manual is a dying art. |

@Topic: Personally, MT FTW! Although AT will sell more here in the US. |
AT ( for sure ) because the typical driver in the US is lazy.
[[ Myself included I drive an AT ( DSG ) ... but for the BRZ I want 6SP because I want to be involved in the process ... since its so simple to drive the DSG there is really no need for much driver input]] |

AT outsells MT. I figure it will be 80% AT and 20% MT. From the reviews the AT a pretty good one since it is based off the IS-F, which is pretty awesome.
|
MT for the first few months, AT for the rest by a large margin
|
I'm hoping that the MT sells better at first. More chance for me to get an AT while someone else on the list is waiting for a manual.
I do like driving a manual, but the last three cars I've owned have been Manumatics of different types with paddle shifters. I've got to admit it's a really nice compromise especially in a car that will be used as a daily driver. |
In the US probaly AT. Where i live, in Germany, i guess MT will be more popular.

Hopefully it will be like the WRX and the auto will not sell well and they'll drop it completely (makes it easier to find used with manuals) but I doubt that will be the case.

Just like they did with the RSX. Just like they did with the Celica. Just like they did with the Eclipse before it became a piece of shit. Just like they do with the Civic coupe. And just like they do with the Miata. Hell, they even thought it about the 240sx back in the day (ask my ef-GF from 10 years ago) It's small, 2-doors, and clean swoopy bodywork and *looks* fast. The Scion front is a little aggro, but so was the last Celica. Girls love them, and they'll love this. And it'll turn 70/30 auto-manual by year 3. On the WRX: Most people find WRX is quirky looking at best, and visually abhorrent at worst. I personally like them, but I'm not in the majority. It probably has 90% male buyers, and most of them boy-racer or brosef types. That's why they were able to axe the auto. Nobody who bought the car wanted one. |

Out of the 1709 Miatas for sale on cars.com, 51% are manual, 32% are automatic, and 17% are other/unknown/unlisted. I don't see any reason that the FR-S/BRZ would sell more ATs than MTs, especially at a 4:1 ratio like several here have suggested. People buying this car are going for the driving experience which is, subjectively, better with an MT. It doesn't have a drop top to appeal to those just wanting a weekend cruiser, it doesn't have decent back seats, it will cost more than the tC. I think the Mustang and Camaro will still get your teenage girl segment, the Miata will still get your empty nest couples looking for a fun weekend roadster, and the tC will get the early 20s folks that want a sporty looking car that still fits 3 friends.
