FR-S aces "Moderate Overlap" crash test.

We already know that the FR-Z aced with "Good" scores on rear, side and roof protection tests administered by the IIHS. However, now it has passed the "Moderate Overlap Front Test" collision as well. This test simulates a crash where the other vehicle hits around 40% of the test vehicle's front end. IIHS still hasn't performed the "Small Overlap" test that simulates a collision involving just a front corner, or less than 25%, of the test vehicle's front end.

Baller. I wasn't sure if they were even going to test it for this. I know it's a bit harder than the others to ace so that's impressive.

This is a beautiful picture! Look at that crumple zone. Delicious! Look at the cabin's strength. Marvelous! That fine gentlemen is going to walk away :p

In the moderate overlap frontal test, a vehicle travels at 40 mph toward a barrier with a deformable face made of aluminum honeycomb. The barrier face is just over 2 feet tall. A Hybrid III dummy representing an average-size man is positioned in the driver seat. Forty percent of the total width of the vehicle strikes the barrier on the driver side.

The forces in the test are similar to those that would result from a frontal offset crash between two vehicles of the same weight, each going just under 40 mph.

Is it because the other object doesn't move or crumble that indicates this is the result of two cars going 40 mph? I always thought that if two objects were doing 40 mph the forces applied at impact are more like 80 mph?

Mythbusters did some tests on this... I can't remember the episode now. Look it up?

This is really impressive...

This is the moderate overlap test which most cars do OK in, the new one that is trashing cars is the small overlap test.

This is a great question. Can you contact IIHS/HLDI's public information department and get an answer, and let us know?
