A few came with max performance summer tires as a factory option, but that was pretty rare -- Bridgestone Potenza RE050A.

Put the FR-S on equal tires and the lap time would be closer.

Also, the GTI is a 2.0 liter turbo. The FR-S is a 2.0 liter NA. Lets call up Full Blown Motorsports, add a turbo to a stock FR-S with equal tires, and then see which one has the faster lap time. The price for the modded FR-S would probably be about the same as the GTI.

Nothing unexpected here, everything said is valid and makes sense.

It comes down to preference.

Lets not forget it was 7k more than frs. Turbo FRS, just like the ugly ass VW and its frs all day. I think, still need to see an FRS turbo on track test vs the GTI.

The modded fr-s will not last nearly as long. Plus wheels and turbo kit would push you up 8-10k. My gti with the same features as my fr-s plus some (my gti had heated seats and satalite radio) and it only cost me 22500 brand new. My fr-s out the door was almost 26k. The 32k gti has more features then any fr-s. It has even more features then a fully loaded brz premium which is a lot closer to that 32k mark. Don't get me wrong I love my fr-s but I could see how it is not for everyone and the gti is a awesome car especially with the dsg transmission.

Factor in the GTI is just ugly. Believe me, drive that in town it will go unnoticed. No one will care you will just fit in. If that is what you want... For some reason. Lol.

What a dumb argument. Get a car for what it offers YOU, not what it offers others.

Congratulations Automatic DSG VW GTI Turbo that was driven by a non-professional driver, you just beat a Manual car that is NA and has Prius tires that was driven by a non-professional driver. After the video was finished it left me completely blank, sort of like 'what the heck just happened, I just watched 10 minutes of two person thinking two different things'.

Please Brit guy, go ahead and eat your own poop. You said you would rather do that than drive the Scion. Maybe that would muffle your whiney "VW practical" mantra. Is that why Brit dude needed to yak in the out-takes, he ate too much poop?

Seriously though, this was one strange comparison and their judgment criteria was pretty much unestablished other than them rattling on and on during the test drives. Motor Trend has hit a new low. Major pricing diff, front versus rear wheel drive, hatchback versus coupe, practical versus fun to drive....I just don't get why this video was even made. Even if they picked the Scion in the end, this video was pointless.

Clearly a flame-inspiring video.

Unfortunately:
- GTI has an extra 50ft/lbs of torque
- GTI comes with wider 225/40R18 rubber: either either P-Zero Nero Ultra High Performance All-Seasons, Dunlop SP Sport 01 A/S UHF All Seasons, or Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Max Performance summer tires.

Wider rubber and better rubber, plus lots of extra torque = makes sense it was faster.

Put some decent tires on the 86 and see what happens. I'm pretty sure I've seen previous articles where just decent summer rubber shaves 2-4 seconds off on a track \.

It's meant to say that front wheel drive is an impairment. It's still a fundamentally terrible idea to ask one set of wheels to perform two jobs simultaneously, even if there are ways to minimize the suck.

The Golf was the first to be eliminated in this Fifth Gear shootout.

Seems it isn't that good even among the latest hatchbacks.

I was wondering about that myself. Pretty sure that the slow ass Honda Civic Si usually puts down better lap times because the Golf is more designed to be comfy, classy, and practical instead of a real performance contender.

I think a lot of this review boils down to that British guy being a terrible driver.

It's like people forgot why we buy things. To make us happy. Not look at the numbers. If numbers made you happy, don't buy anything and your bank account will look better.

I believe his point is that its got the econobox stigma which is hard to shake.. from far away if you squint, it actually does look like a MINI van.

The FRS a head turner, heck I even get girls waving.. this is unreal.. that's never happened on my civic.. and I don't know them.. that alone defines the better car, because let's face it, we're not going to track the car on regular roads. Oh yeah and its more affordable (part of my decision point).

For me its practical enough, I can carry all my surf gear, and I can carry all my kids (but not both at the same time, I have a minivan for that).
