Ask the dealership where you would normally get serviced if a Toyota part will void your Subaru warranty.

Chances are, yes.

You warranty won't be voided, but a claim can be denied.

If you put random intake on a turbo-Subaru w/o a reflash - I can see them trying to blame the intake.

If you put TRD intake on a BRZ, I guess it's technically feasible to say that TRD does not comply with Subaru OEM standard for intakes and deny your claim. But I guess one would have a case in court, since Scion and BRZ are mechanically identical and TRD parts don't affect Scion warranty.

Personally, in your case, I'd go for it. Personally, in my case, I'll wait for Subaru to release it as an SPT part.

And in case you hear "put it on, if anything fails they have to prove it was the intake" - that's incorrect. They have to prove something when the part you put on is OEM-spec. When it's non-OEM-spec, they don't have to prove squat, just show that part is non-OEM-spec.

That's a useful link, but it's SEMA, so the info is biased. In that it's talking in terms that are to broad w/o specifics and only selectively quoting Magnuson-Moss act.

The spirit/purpose of that act is to allow anyone to produce OEM-spec maintenance parts. Not to slap on some random intake that leans out the mixture and make manufacturer prove that it was the intake that caused the engine to go kaboom. If the replacement part is OEM-spec = Magnuson-Moss certainly applies and manufacturers have to prove. If the replacement part in non-OEM-spec all manufacturers have to prove that it's non-OEM-spec.

That's the theory. In practice failures caused by non-OEM-spec parts frequently just bring forward failures that would've occured anyway, in that case there could be sufficient evidence to think that the failure could've happened w/o the mod, so one can win in court.

Anyway, on the TRD intake. Personally I'm yet to be convinced it shows gains due to improved airflow vs. leaning out the mixture via tricking MAF. So I'll wait for that info (done on the same car/dyno/day), or for SPT to come out, whichever comes first.

OP is Canadian so the Magnuson-Moss act probably doesn't apply

Best bet is to check with the dealership that will be doing the warranty work on your car. Each dealership is different, some are mod friendly and others will deny everything.

I contacted SPT a little while ago and they stated that they have nor immediate plans to make any SPT parts for the BRZ :(

Reposting what I said in the TRD CAI thread:

It won't void warranty repairs to unrelated faulty parts like, say, a faulty transmission. But if Subaru can attribute an issue to the intake, they can try to refuse warranty repairs unless it can be proven to not have been caused by the intake. If it's an issue many others have had even with a stock intake, then it can be argued that the intake was not the culprit and you should qualify for warranty repair. For example, I asked my dealer (who noted my Takeda intake in their records) if warranty would be honored I were ever to get the idle/CEL issue and they said yes. If your dealer is being a hardass, look for another more understanding dealer and don't be a douche because being granted warranty service can boil down to your people skills. If none of the above work, as a last resort you can try to contest in court with backing from Toyota since this intake is designed and warrantied by the OEM for use on identical OEM parts.

Generally, they should be lenient on things such as intake and exhaust. Those are very common mods and I've never heard horror stories from people being refused warranty repair nor of things breaking because of those mods. I'd be more weary of modding things like your engine internals or forced induction.

With all the above being more on your side rather than against, I wouldn't worry so much. Someone can chime in if I'm wrong.

The stock intake practically is a CAI, it's right up front like a CAI. Try a performance filter.

lmfao
