Additional "pedal dance" testing.
 

This past weekend at WSIR and the 2nd FT86CUP event, we did some additional Brake Dance testing.

Quick and dirty:
Without the brake dance, if you upset the car's computers enough, it will still re-engage traction and stability control. This specifically involves enough of a loss of traction that you're getting what the ECU believe to be uncontrolled wheelspin, the equivalent of lifting a rear wheel. The slip light will turn solid, and the traction/stability lights will turn off. After the "uncontrolled wheel spin" is eliminated, the slip light will turn off, and the traction/stability lights will turn back on (indicating that the systems are again "disabled")

This was most apparent through Turn 8 of WSIR, which is an ultra high speed, extremely bumpy sweeper. This was replicated lap after lap. The stability control engaging at 110+MPH was rather... scary. There were some 100+MPH slides induced BY THE COMPUTER.

Results were independently reproduced by @D1cker in his own car; Derek is the fastest non shop-sponsored FR-S/BRZ driver in SoCal.

You can also experience this by going through a driveway where you lift a rear wheel from lack of droop. Even with traction/stability off, the ECU will still engage traction/stability, and brake the wheel to allow the wheel in contact with the ground to put some power down.

Moral of the story: If you are doing performance driving and are comfortable turning the computer aids off, do the pedal dance!

I don't really understand why they have a pseudo option to disable it but yet it's not disabled but have some back door De-activation.

You are positive everything in braking system is operating properly when you peddle dance?

Absolutely. I've been trying a lot of pedal dance vs "turn tc/sc off by holding the button 3 seconds".

Is there way to deactivate this was using ECUTek flash do you know?
Or as of now its a manual process every startup?

Thanks for the post. Agreed, there's something else happening with all of it off that my other not-so-smart/safe cars didn't do. Is there a speed limit min or just a combination of speed/angles/bumps/rotations? Some of our backroads offer challenges to the car and having been very familiar with the roads, "I swear I turned that off" moments are not rare. Better safe than sorry for sure.

Same experience we've had - if you deactive traction control via the center console button, the system is still on to some extent. Pedal dance fixed it...no problems at all....save for inside rear wheel lift. Womp womp.

WSIR is BUMPY. Think going over speed bumps, except at 120mph....

It's anytime the bump is extreme enough to give you more than a momentary lift with the wheels. In this case, only the right wheel is lifting, which is why the system freaks out. In my experience, if both wheels lift, then it's not an issue.


*disclaimer*

Some testing was done under artificial conditions to exacerbate the results. Rebound damping was purposely set "too high" to make rear wheel contact with the ground (far) less than ideal in the name of conclusive results.

HOWEVER, we are able to replicate the results even with normal track damping, and even softer (comfort) damping settings.

IIRC, someone sells a module to do it. I don't believe ECUTek can do it, and from a legal standpoint, it would be pretty stupid of them to add it.

I recommend doing it manually. That way, if a stranger/valet/friend/family/etc. drives your car, they're driving with everything on for their (and your) safety.

Have we determined why Left foot Brakers seem to be having more of an issue with this than normal brakers??? Besides the normal Can't push the brake and the gas at the Same time.. otherwise the EBD freaks the hell out... thing..

I don't left foot brake at all but my car was trying to kill me through 8, I'll upload video later tonight hopefully showing what happened.

Of note:

I was able to replicate the "slip light turning solid when going over big bumps or left foot braking" this weekend while canyoning when not using the pedal dance.

It's also typically accompanied with a CEL. The CEL is soft and goes away after a while.

No idea; it cleared itself before I could check. It disappears that quickly.

my rear brakes work way better than the stock units. If I don't do the pedal dance the rear braking to "keep the rear dif locked" is intrusive abusive AND totally unnessisary as without a rear sway the car NEVER even thinks about lifting the inside rear wheel.. the g sensors are telling the ECU that so much side G is developing that the inside rear "MUST" be lifting.. its a real PITA...I hate "predictive" algorythms it's what produces Ice mode too...
