staggered setup - how's the tire wear?
 

Anyone with a daily driver with a staggered wheel size....how's the tire wear? What's wearing more, front or back?

My FRS will have an 18x8.5/18x9.5 - 225-40/255-35 setup. Wondering how much to budget for tires down the road. My Celica GTS has always gotten at least 30k miles no matter what kind of tires I was running, with rotation about every 10k. Daily driver, and am pushing 240k miles on the car.

With no rotation, just wondering which ones I'll be replacing more often. Or is it possible they'll wear about the same since the rears will be wider?

I could be talked into a square setup, but staggered looks so damn good it's gonna be hard to pass up.

With a RWD car on a staggered set up you will wear the rear tires alot fast than the front tires. When your rear tires are worn down enough you just replace those leaving the front tires until they wear out all the way.

You will understeer into a tree and die.

considering that this car is low powered (for 255s) and was designed for a square setup, i would guess that the exact opposite is true. you will no longer have the power to generate enough slip angle out back while you will wasting tire potentially scrubbing off speed at the front.

with this cars relatively balanced in steady state cornering and front heavy, the fronts might even wear first on a square setup. keep in mind that many modifications, especially an alignment can change everything.

Depends on how you drive, but most likely the rears will be worn down before the fronts no matter what. I have a square setup and my rears (215/45-17 Kumho Ecsta XS) are worn down to the wear indicators while (average tread depth measured @ 1.5mm) while the fronts still have lots of tread depth left (average tread depth measured @ 4.0mm) after ~9k miles on them. I know its mainly because I like to have and feel a tiny slip angle when turning, steering from the rear... would probably be best to rotate the tires every oil change to even the wear on a square setup.

Kind of extreme but funny none the less.

However, this is entirely dependent on how you have your suspension setup. I run staggered daily and with a few quick suspension adjustments it handles the same as squared on the street. I can get my 255s to break free or stick just as easy as 215s based on the way I set the suspension. I do have a set of squared wheels and tires for track too but really I dont need em other than the r compounds are cheaper that way haha. My staggered daily setup is set to oversteer.
