Live in MI and MUST get snow tire for next winter!!!!!
Hey guys. I live in MI and here snow A LOT@!!! (6month summer + 6 month snow) shit...
I trade my front wheel car in to get FRS (opps) , do I need to get extra wheels for snow tires? Or just swap and save money for the wheels. |
I got some used 16in impreza wheels for winter. Keep an eye out and you can find them cheap on craisglist, or check impreza forums.

The issue isn't the RWD, it's the fact that summer tires are not for winter. Buy rims. Most people I know use steel rims. If you are planning on upgrading your tires and rims anyway, beat the crap out of the OE tires before next winter and put winters on the OE rims.
|
Steelies are ugly and heavy, but if you must use them you must. I'd recommend getting a nice set of lightweight summer wheels for your summers and just use the heavy OEM wheels for the winter tires. Lots of us doing that. If you're looking for a nice quality wheel that won't break the bank, hit Tire Rack and snag a set of Kosei K4Rs.

The summer tires are hilariously entertaining in snow due to the low grip levels but you won't really be able to get anywhere beyond 30MPH.
Grab some nice winter tires and rims and daily drive that goodness. |
Thinner is better for snow. And you will end up saving money from mounting fees if you just get a set of dedicated rims. Glad to see you arent to proud to own snow tires.

I live in Southern Ontario, Canada, and get more or less the same weather you do. We got a LOT of snow this year and I had great luck running a set of Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60s in a 205/55/16 size. The WS-60s have been replaced by the WS-70, and I've heard they're just as good. Not the cheapest tire but well worth it.

Do you live in da UP, eh? 'Cuz even this year, which was the worst of the past few for sure, it snowed for 3 months... I got summer wheels/tires, and plan on putting winter tires on stock wheels for winter. Definitely all in the tires...

I hate the stock rims so I figure when I get mine I will put snow tires on those and the stock tires on nicer rims. Anyone have any driving experiences in winter with snow tires on these cars?? Let me know how you fared!

We had a really tough winter here in Minnesota and I ran Firestone Winterforce. Great tires!
|
I ran 16"steelies with general arctic altimax tires with studs last year on the frs and got around great.
I recommend buying shitty 16s for winters the reason being Ir'd that tires for the 16s are quite a bit cheaper. 17s are an odd size and more money/less selection Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2 |
