Would be quite surprised if we could take a golf Gti (specially up here at altitude). Have however raced a friend more than once in his Polo Gti and was very surprised that we were neck and nek for all races. Considering he has dsg, launch control, turbo and supercharger and the same claimed 0-100 time as the golf, I reckon that's pretty respectable for our "super slow" cars! :happy0180: |
Edit : nevermind

ZA1JA00G --> ZA1JA01G :w00t:
Done and dusted, thanks to NTT Toyota Barberton. :thanks: Any difference - hell yeah. I found it quite noticably different. Mid-range torque flat spot is IMO considerably less. :w00t: Not totally gone, but a lot better. Top-end - no difference that I could feel. I was worried that the timing retardation over 5200rpm would be noticable - but I couldn't feel it. Maybe a dyno will show something, but for me the top end is still fine. Bottom line - since it was done, I've done 80kms through the MPU twisties. If you know the roads - then it was up Saddleback Pass behind Barberton to the Shiyalongubu turnoff, back down to B'ton, then R40 to Nelspruit via Hilltop Pass. Altitude - 600m-900m I like. A great, but new and evolving car is slowly but surely getting very nicely sorted out. PS: Oh, and hopefully now my direct injectors (and my engine) won't self-destruct if I drive enthusiastically... |

Hi guys, I'm new here. Picking up my baby on Friday. Gateway Toyota is doing my PDI. Would my model have the Software upgrade already, or would I still need to ask them to do it ?
Thanks a stack for everyones knowlege on this blog....spent the last week catching up. |
Probably will have it.

:thanks: Will do...

Hi all,
Sorry if my question is repetition: Has anyone done the update at Barloworld Toyota on the corner of Garsfontein and gen lois Botha in Pretoria? And what was your experience. Can you take your car in before the service interval and who should you contact/speak to, to arrange? How long does it take/cost ect? Thank you |
toyota westville has not heard of this upgrade. They havent received a technical bulletin from toyota SA. Anyone in KZN did this upgrade?
|
Toyota Gateway don't know anything of it either.....that's expected of our KZN dealerships

So I finally had my software updated on Wednesday at Toyota Edenvale. They hadn't heard of the update either until I told them about it and had to forward them the pics DrSutra posted before they even believed me. And even after that it took close on 3 weeks before they could have it done.:mad0259:
Anyway, as far as the update goes, I will say that there is a subtle difference in the mid range. but noticeable enough if you have a good feel for how the car responded before the update. That slight flat spot after shifting from high revs has practically disappeared. The most important thing though is that my injectors will hopefully have a much longer life now. :burnrubber: I'm still annoyed though at how many of us battled to find/convince dealers that this update even existed and without this forum, most would probably still be driving around without it.:paddle: |
Its because they don't pay attention to the service bulletins from Toyota.
|
sup gents!
Just did my first service last week at Killarney Toyota in Stanger, they managed to find the software update but i did have to take my car in on two days. lol! they didnt have all the parts for a service! so if any of the durban guys having a problem finding the software update just get your dealership to call them and see what they can do. other than that i noticed very little from the remap other than the mid range feels better. somehow i feel like the throttle is slightly softer between 0 and 25%, makes it somewhat easier to cruise with on a long trot. but I could be imagining it. still need to punt it around a bit. anywho, cars is on the button and is so much stronger down on the coast! absolutely loving it. now im biding my time for an induction and exhaust. |

Dealers cannot claim from TSA as part of your service plan to do the upgrade prior to service, so hence many will decline to assist until 15000km service.
Those helpful dealers or if you have a good relationship with your Workshop Manager, will do this free for you. The upgrade gives slight improvement to mid, but drops off at top end quicker. Red line is the run after SW upgrade. |
Eish Ryan, do you want us to do handstands or what?
|
Holy crap! That Dyno chart is printed upside down... they should bin it and get a new printer. ;)
Am i reading that correctly: -0.2% torque, +2.6% power? |
they must just turn the printer around
|
Turn your tablets around. DOH :paddle:
For some reason pictures invert when pasting from Ipad. I have rotated and still upside down.:slap: So stand on your head :laughabove: |
Looks like the Torque dip is pulled out of a bit earlier, sacrificing a bit of power near the top of the rev range in return.
Either way, the difference is not substantial enough to really notice, I'd say. my reckoning is that the Torque dip is there for comfortable city driving anyway. I, of course, don't have to live with it (yet), but when I test drove the 86, that's one of the things I liked - the fact that it doesn't just want to go fast everywhere, but can be calm as well. |
I actually enjoy the schizophrenic nature of this car, and I've got used to either driving calmly below the dip, or like a lunatic above the dip.
It's like an on/off volume switch. Maybe it suits my personality :happyanim: I'm surprised by Ryan's results (but not disputing them in any way) because I felt a very noticable difference after the software upgrade. Thinking aloud... I wonder if that's because I rarely drive through the torque dip at WOT, and that I'm sensing a more linear torque delivery at (say) 75% throttle? :iono: |

The small curve change in the dip will be noticeable with your bumdyno.
Here is a second dyno run on the same dyno different day. The upgrade is for the injector spray angle, to prevent seals popping, which creates slight more mid improvement and less or same at top end. Bear in mind the peak power is at 6800rpm, so you really would not feel loss as you should be changing gear around there before hitting limiter at 7400rpm anyway. |
Ha-ha!! The bumdyno is what's important.
If it feels good, then it IS good. :w00t: But I'm a bit curious about what I said in my last post - I wonder if the torque dip will be so obvious at a lower throttle opening. eg: Doing a dyno pull at 75% throttle. Will it show the same picture? But who cares.... :party0030: Right now my mission is to fully understand my sticky rubber. Another day I'll be worrying about more hp, then I'll bolt on an s/c rather than fiddle with the small things. |
To make all our lives a bit easier, I've compiled a list of which dealerships do the software update and which don't.
Dealerships that do the update Gauteng
Dealerships that don't, won't or can't Gauteng
|
Thanks
You can add: Imperial Toyota Nelspruit to Mpumalanga, they did mine with no fuss. |
Western Cape
Market Toyota Culemborg --> they upgraded mine a few weeks ago, what do you base your info on? |

Printed all the foto's of "DrSUTRA" posted on page 3 of software update and took it to "Algoa Toyota Uitenhage" They got hold of the software and sorted me out in no time.
|
Had my update done just over 2 months ago, and it fixed the idle dip problem, but now in the last week I've noticed that it's back again, in the last 2 months it hasn't once dipped, and then on Monday it dipped and everyday since that, any takes?

Have you tried resetting your ECU?
Disconnect battery for 1 minute or so! Have you been using Engen fuel? Sent from my SS707 using Tapatalk 2 |

Did my software update at barloworld toyota in centurion, right behind super-sport park.
amazed at how you can really feel the difference! What is wrong with Engen fuel?? |
Hi guys I took my car in n showed them the pictures n they didn't no anything about it but than they checked n said ok I should book my car in but they said they might keep it over night cause they must strip n see if it's damaging anything. Is that right should it stay over night ? Some help please
|
whats wrong?

Otherwise, if you haven't been hearing loud "popping" (indicative of direct injector failure) then I would be very reluctant to let them strip anything. Just get the software up to date and you should be fine IMO.
