Guys, I had an awful experience at Walser Subaru today. I went after work to meet with my friend who is a sales associate there to discuss the BRZ and place a deposit down on the car for a pre-order.

I was asked to give a $500 deposit (check or cc) to be the first of the 5 total allocated units for the remainder of the year at Walser. I explained that I didn't have any checks on me but I'd get one from my credit union Monday and have the ability to finance via my credit union with proof of my score.

My friend (sales guy) said 'absolutely no problem, I'll just let my manager know'. My friend comes back and says 'I'll need you to fill out this credit application to approve the BRZ preorder' I said 'why?' and he told me it was standard procedure for their dealership since they've been burned in the past on STI's and other machines. I then explained how I was going to finance through my credit union and how I didn't need to fill out any of this in order to give a $500 deposit.

I then asked to inform the manager of this in my own words without my friend having to play messenger. He brought over his manager named 'Za**' (who shall remain anonymous and Canadian) who belittled me into attempting to fill out a credit app. I was disgusted at the tone of voice and the way he handled my willingness to get the BRZ. I explained that my $500 deposit and ability to fund a $29000 car would be something I'd consider prior to walking in the dealership and that my credit doesn't need to be placed in limbo within Walser's system. He then asked about my ability to get financed with a negative tone and then stated 'oh, we can do much better than 2.49% for 60' . Why the fuck would you say that in such a disdainful tone?

I'm sticking with the FR-S based off of this horrible manager experience at WALSER Subaru in Burnsville. Be aware, if you want the BRZ at this dealership, they will make you fill out a credit application!

Night and day difference from my experience at Bloomington Subaru. The were very positive, and have been keeping me updated with whatever new info the get (which isn't much). I'm a little nervous that I'm number 7 on their list but I'm assuming that at lest a few of those won't end up buying from them.

It was odd, because I was set on the FR-S but I wanted to see what my friend had to offer. The number 1 would have been nice, but not with the bs I had to endure.

Is that the official waiting list? eg., did all those pep ole already put down a $500 deposit.

I thought MN Subaru dealers weren't taking deposits yet.

Bloomington Subaru is doing it a bit different then what I've heard from other dealerships. They asked for $250 deposit for now to reserve the place in line. Once they can acutally oreder from SoA they will need another $750 (for a total of $1000).

I'm hoping that when it comes to coughing up the rest of the deposit some of the people ahead of me will bow out.

I might have to reserve a WRB Limited MT at Bloomington even though Brookdale Subaru is closer to me.

Hmm...

Hmm...

Bloomington is also the highest volume dealer in the area from what I've heard so they may be allocating them more based on well backed rumors on here

According to my source at Walser, the only dealer getting more than they are is Bloomington Subaru at 8-10.

I really hope so, they look great and I can't wait to see one in person.

Just received this email from Walser Burnsville Subaru:

Hello xxx,

As promised, I am getting you info on the BRZ as I receive it. Wanted to let you know we are only allocated 5 BRZ’s between May and December, so it is first come, first served on Factory orders and we can order now. Let me know if you would like to go ahead.

Best regards,

xxx

ayau 02-28-2012 04:41 AM

looks like the march 27th preordering date wasn't off after all.

ayau 02-28-2012 08:02 AM

it also looks like the brz is coming to the TC auto show.

now i'm hesitant to order with walser subaru after reading Chupacabra's poor experience with the manager.

i don't have a problem with them checking my credit as i'm sure i'll be approved for their financing, but hopefully it doesn't mean that i'm locked in with them for financing. the frustrating part is that we don't know if mn subaru dealers will price gouge the brz due to the limited quantity. if they charge over msrp, i'm pretty sure i'll just wait until i can buy one at msrp.

It is enticing to be one of the few in with a preorder and if you're prepared financially, you should walk in with some type of proof. According to my friend, it's Walser's policy to have your credit run (supposedly once) to go through with a preorder. The major challenge I had was they also need you to sign a credit disclosure. This is where you simply release your credit history to Walser for them to pull whenever they feel like doing so. Ex: You decide to pass on the BRZ, but they have promotional financing for Imprezas and they want to qualify you, they'll dial your credit history (they claim a soft pull) and will contact you via phone, email or mailer to inform you that you qualify.

The problem is, by signing a credit disclosure, you are allowing them to run your credit which is scary. A soft pull through Equifax drops your score 3 points which isn't much...but it is still a negation on your credit score for 90 days until it goes away. And Walser probably wants your credit info to make money for the dealer network, because there will not be too much operable margin within the BRZ.

On that note, the BRZ will most likely be sold here in MN at MSRP. I don't envision price lifts on that car, and most Japanese car buyers are too savvy to buy over MSRP.

Chupacabra 02-28-2012 02:09 PM

New update: my friend called me from Walser and told me they'd be willing to do a $1000 non-refundable deposit for the BRZ since the rate of production between the Scion and Subaru is going to be so different.

That's great news but since I'm going to be in Italy in 2 weeks, my cash flow is frozen until I get back. I told him that I'd make my official decision once I return, but because I felt burned with his asinine manager I will probably stick with the FR-S. In 3 weeks, I'll have an official decision made.

I wanted to share that with everyone here so you'd have knowledge prior to getting at Walser.

neutron256 02-28-2012 02:38 PM

Any idea how many people have put down deposits at Walser?

Chupacabra 02-28-2012 03:00 PM

I don't think anyone has, I would have been the first

Chupacabra 02-28-2012 03:03 PM

So, I don't know if they were making an exception for me about the deposit because I would have caused a stir with Subaru NA...but I wouldn't blare that I have an opportunity to the dealership. If you approach it that you'd be more comfortable placing a non-refundable deposit, they'd probably listen to you

ayau 02-28-2012 03:47 PM

i just put down my $500 refundable deposit over the phone with a subaru sales person at walser over the phone.

subaru will open up their ordering system to dealers on march 1st, and walser will be allocated at least 5 brzs from now until nov 2011.

a credit check was required and i provided my info to the sales person. it's understandable why they'd do a credit check, otherwise anyone can order their own subaru and back out of the purchase. i asked him if my credit will be pulled whenever they wanted or if it was only for this purchase of the brz, and he said it's only being pulled for the purchase of the brz. you can take that for what it's worth.

for the pre-order, the sales person needed to know the color, transmission type, and trim (premium or limited) but no price was given. he was only taking down my info, and will be putting it into the subaru order system on 3/1. there's a chance that prices will be released on 3/1, but i wouldn't bet on it. if the limited spec goes for over 30k, i'm pretty sure i'll back down and just order a FRS instead.

when asked if they were planning to sell the BRZ above msrp, he told me that they were planning to sell at MSRP. hopefully that's true.

according to my contact, i'm #2 on the pre-order list at walser.

for those that who are curious, i ordered a WRB 6MT Limited model. :D

ayau 02-28-2012 03:52 PM

one more thing, the sales person gave me a list of accessories that were available for the BRZ. i didn't write them down, but i'll list out the ones that caught my attention.

fog lights
rear deck spoiler
subwoofer - 10'' i think
rear underbody spoiler - i asked him what this was, but he wasn't sure. no price on this either. maybe this is the underbody air flow kit that we see in the jdm spec.
oil cap - sti?
gas cover - maybe the sti gas cap from the jdm brz catalog?

there was no pricing info on the accessories. i don't recall him mentioning the bigger jdm exhaust tips, something i really hoped would be available. i guess i'll just have to order one online.

these were just some of the available accessories. subaru may release more when accessories in a couple weeks.

ayau 02-28-2012 04:05 PM

just to give you guys some info on the availability of the BRZ, i asked the sales guy how the BRZ allocation system works compared to the current subaru models. we know that walser will be allocated 5 brz from now until nov 2011. in comparison with an outback (or maybe he said impreza), they are usually allocated about 11 when the new model year comes out for the first month and a half.

brz - 5 for the first 6 months if it's released in june.
outback - 11 for the first month and a half.

what a huge difference!

it's probably not a bad idea to start pre-ordering now if you want guaranteed brz in 2011. i'm guessing bloomington subaru will be allocated more, but it looks like there's already a waiting list of about 7 people according to previous posts in this thread.

Thanks for the update ayau and I'm glad you were able to get taken care of at Walser. I'm also stoked you're getting the WRB Limited. That was actually going to be what I ordered had I gone BRZ. Everything happens for a reason and I hope you'll get your BRZ May 1st!

May 1st?

Subaru pre-ordering starts on 3/1. We still don't know when the cars will actually arrive at dealers. :\

Haha, yeah. I was saying I hope you get yours sooner than later. :)

From what my friend told me, it'll be anytime from May to November as to ETA on the BRZ, so I was just saying I hope you get it May 1st

Wow, either their policy has changed drastically or their sales managers are pricks. I used to work at a Walser dealership and we could not in no way keep someone's deposit. Additionally, we never had a policy to pull credit upon a deposit. Obviously, what they're doing is trying to see how committed you are to the deal.

I have a feeling your friend tried to follow up with or was followed up by Za...and since it sounded like you guys sorta butted heads last time you met, he's holding a grudge on you now and won't let you just place a normal $500 refundable deposit lol.

I feel for your friend. I worked with a manager that made the sales process way more difficult than it was.

Walser only asked for a $500 deposit when I pre-ordered mine and the deposit was refundable.

I actually just cancelled my pre-order with Walser and went with Morrie's in Brooklyn Park instead. Morrie's has a lifetime powertrain warranty free of charge. When I asked the sales person the differences between the original powertrain warranty vs. their lifetime powertrain, he said that it was slightly different. He didn't go into the specifics as I'm assuming he doesn't have the list of things that are covered memorized, but it will cover most of it.

Morrie's will be allocated 16 BRZs between their 2 dealers. The sales manager said that the BRZ allocation system is based on the STIs, and since their dealer sells the most in the state of MN, they're allocated more BRZs. I'm currently #2 on the list.

The sales manager and the sales person told me that the official price will be available on the Subaru pre-ordering system. If that's true, we can expect prices on 3/1.

When asked if they'll mark up the price from MSRP, the sales manager said there was a possibility, but it won't be anything outrageous. Just as an example, he told me that they marked up the GTR by $1,000. Considering that the GTR is about $90,000, a 1% mark up isn't that bad.

Starscream15 02-28-2012 06:01 PM

Hello all,

North Burbs here, #4 on the list at Morries Subaru as of today. Aiming for a Black Mica Premium.

Edit: $500 refundable for me as well.

Even better news for you ayau. This place seems like the place to buy a BRZ. Any idea of where you ended up on the list of 16?

I edited my original post and put where I was on the list.

Between the 2 Morrie dealers, they have a total of 16 allocated BRZs. I'm 3/16 and #2 at Morrie's in Brooklyn Park.

Which Morrie's was that? It sounds like the sales manager in Brooklyn Park is going through the list of names who are interested in the BRZ.

Brooklyn Park Subaru also.

Bruce Bowman is my salesman, I worked with him there for about 6 years and always worked with him on my car deals. He called me this afternoon after he found out they could start taking orders. I would recommend him if anyone is going to call them. He is very good people.

xrs 02-29-2012 01:12 AM

A thought came to me. By the time we get our hands on the cars, we'll only have like four months to drive them. So much for a spring release time. I hope BRZ price leaks in the next few days. At least I'll know FR-S will start somewhere below.

ayau 02-29-2012 01:30 AM

will you guys drive the brz/frs in the winter? personally i'm going to garage it and only drive it in the spring/summer. i'm more worried about the salt than traction more than anything.

Yeah...I think people will be less excited about the price of the BRZ in comparison to the FR-S. It will probably command a larger spread.

I will most likely purchase blizzaks and fly in the winter. I have a Holiday gas station next to my job that has a carwash. That's my only issue with my car (tc) in the winter. I'm too low for automatic car washes since every bunghole has to own a massive SUV and wash it frequently.

The BRZ will be my daily driver, although I work from home so that's really not that much driving. Just going to get it washed regularly but not going to baby it. I've already figured out that I can put Blizzaks on my Summer wheels from my CR-Z that I'll will be trading in so that will be nice and save me $ on a set of winter wheels.

If anyone wants the winter wheels from my CR-Z I'll give them a great deal they will also fit a 2006 and newer Civic. :)

Yup, same here. Car will be garaged. I do plan on driving it a few times in the winter but only if the roads are nice and clear. FRS will be vehicle #3.
