Japan BRZ / 86 pre-order numbers
Our Japan office talked to SoJ and ToJ a bit yesterday, and unofficial semi-official numbers as of the 18th have the BRZ at 5000 pre-ordered, and the 86 at 8000 pre-ordered. Anybody in Japan trying to order either the Subaru or Toyota will have to wait till August now...

That's pretty surprising that pre-orders have gotten that high already, at least in Japan. I hope in the states the public will be open to pre-order as well, I wanna pre-order mine before I'm put on a waiting list for a while.

This is good new, if this continues it might start another Car revolution in Japan. It's great since it was dying in the mid 2000 with more people interested in cars, that great news for the enthusiast population around the world for sure.

Hard too believe but Toyota has done a lottttt of marketing over there I mean the gaint sign, the test drives, all those japanese reviews, TAS, and we can't forget the unvieling |

Hm... They still have long way to go. Hopefully, this yr & next yr sells it enough, so won't become another S2k

I assume he meant 8000 GT86 preorders. FRS is only our US designation I think.
Does this mean allocation to the US will be slower? If they are already having problems keeping up with pre-orders in Japan then its not going to be pretty the first few month for everywhere else. |

Damn, that's a lot.

Whether the numbers are true or not, if stealerships will try take advantage of low supplies and jack prices up I'm just gonna pass this car up for now. There is always next year to get it when the initial hype is over. Also, if they can't keep up with the demand - too bad, some folks may end up bying something else. I am for one have been eyeing M3 coupe for last couple years. BRZ of course seems much wiser purchase in terms of fun per dollar spent... looking forward to test drive one ;)

thanks Paul! iv also been getting similar reports of a HUGE order of first production vehicles in Japan.
While that doesn't mean anything to us directly in the international market (US/EU/AU/etc). Indirectly it means that market analyses in the small sports car segment might be still alive to move hands of competitors. Which most makers have been conflicted with. |
Good thing that I decided to wait for 2013 or '14 model year.
|
Wow 13,000 JDM pre-orders just since the unveil at Tokyo Motor Show. So much for that rumor about limited worldwide production run in the first year.
I have a feeling Toyobaru has a huge hit on it's hands and the factory will be working around the clock pumping out AS1s. Maybe 40,000-50,000 total first year production? |
This will be the next 240sx mark my words. I mean that in the best way possible!

Lol. Its crazy, but also nice that this car will bring back the sports car. Something to take their minds off of the crappy world economy. |
Lets just hope they don't jack up the prices due to such high demand. Thats my big worry.
|
Once there is enough market saturation I think I'll be able to get
my BRZ limited with VIP program plus 0.9% finance .. maybe Next year. While I do not think the BRZ/GT86 will sell like the Mustang here in the states, I have a feeling that it'll sell TONS in Japan .. while the Mustang is a niche vehicle over there due to its LARGE size and high fuel consumption The BRZ/FR-S in the states will be a Niche vehicle due to its POWER and size... I can't think of any FR 2+2 cars in the same size and price ... the closet to size will be the porsche Carerra/911 being a RR 2+2 ... |
Hey at least that means when it comes in you will get it fresh off the boat with 0 miles :D

As in France this car will not sell, believe me I know french, will I be able to get mine before?
|
Wow, I hope it is a huge hit in the US, too. I hope that this doesn't make it hard to go take a test drive when it's finally available. With the need for instant gratification so common, it could really hurt potential sales if they can't supply the demand for the car.
|
Thats good news. I love to get a car that is popular like the Miata with tons of parts and after market support. I never understand why people want their car to be the only one on the block.
|
Dang that's a lot.
|
I don't know. I think the numbers are going to be lower in terms of actual sales. Scion showed people interested was lower. It could be scion/Toyota put together?
I mean I know a lot of people including myself put preorders for both Subaru and Toyota. If even 1/3rd the people did that, it would be a lot. Just my opinion. I think co-developing and selling seperately will cost them actual numbers in the number of people interested. Since both cars are the same everywhere else except the US. In my opinon both cars are sexy =D. I talked to a few dealerships and the number of people interested was low. They said its so far been the same people interested. Can people put down preorders in two different dealers? |
No rush for me I am going to wait it out till '13 or '14 and by then there'll be plenty of after market upgrades and what not. Even though i would like to purchase an FRS soon im going to wait for more competition between after market upgrade developers and get better deals on upgrades.
|
I have a feeling a couple parts should transfer nicely for Imprezas to this car tbh. Maybe not a ton of stuff, but I'm sure a couple things will bolt up.
|
Hopefully this means we're going to see the 86 in production for a long time. Toyota wanted to start a new legacy with this car, I hope they succeed.
|
At this rate I don't think some people has a choice but to wait for the late 2013 and 2014 model. Might be possible for us here too in the states, I actually don't mind waiting alittle haha.
|
Is this pre-orders with an actual deposit or "pre-orders" as in signing up on a website?
|
I don't think it works the same way over there as It does over here, usually the people are highly committed or they've already been taken to a test drive event, or to sit in the car or something over in Japan. So highly likely it's deposited. I might be wrong Im going from a past info when cousin pre ordered a Type R over there a couple years ago.
|
Wonder if Nissan executives are facepalming themselves releasing a FWD Altima coupe instead of a true RWD version and naming it the Silvia. No market for an affordable RWD coupe my arse...
|
I hope that means high demand is a result of lower price. Doesn't always happen but I believe they will. I hope...
|
That's a lot for a car that's still 3 months away to the release date. I wonder how this number will grow a month after the release. I think CR-Z was 10k and Prius c is like 60k+? I hope it won't be that hard to get one in U.S...
|
Just to echo a few people here, this is good news for Toyota/Subaru, but bad for people who want the car as soon as it comes out.
I figured at best that there'll be a markup on them when they come out, but now I'm sure it will be at least until 2013 before a good number of us will even get to buy one. Oh well, I figure that I wasn't going to buy one until a year and a half from now anyway. . . :( |

It's a fairly large number, but the Japanese have a fairly large amount of disposable income in comparison to most other countries. From their viewpoint, the 2 to 2.4 million yen price range is cheap. Regards, Paul Hansen www.avoturboworld.com www.facebook.com/BRZSportsCarClub |

Would be interesting to see those CR-Z numbers and other new cars and how it may relate to the BRZ/FR-S/86. |
